Apart from the obvious extra doors, is there anything else?
Thanks for any info...

16vmarc 19 September 2003 09:20 PM

Power!!!! The Evo is a 3.2 biggest engine in 4 door is the 2.8

DavidHill 19 September 2003 09:29 PM

WHAT?? afaik engines were the same, original e36 m3 was 3ltr then this was increased for the evo to 3.2ltr. Never heard of a 2.8 m3.

I know they released a 4 door M3 EVO as I've been looking at them on Autotrader for the last month or so...
The real question is whether they differ in any way to the coupe in terms of handling, steering, weight, performance, gearing etc (to be a bit more precise).

scoobysnacks 19 September 2003 09:56 PM

...and to be even more helpful, the only difference I think there may have been was in terms of suspension stiffness with the 4 door being slightly softer. Is this true?

si325i 20 September 2003 04:17 AM

i think the 2 doors have aluminum doors? or is it all M3's
read that some where.
Si

ScoobySnack 20 September 2003 07:14 AM

Yep Engines were 3.0 then 3.2.............

Yes there were M3 Saloons... (old company I was at had 3 as company cars, now I seem to remember they didn't get as much attention as the coupes, nice street sleeper :) )

All on here http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/bmw_e36.html

turboman786 20 September 2003 10:49 AM

I own a 4 door M3 evo, 3.2.......just as fast as the 2 door ...but with 4 doors.....!

turboman786 20 September 2003 10:58 AM

Reading this thread it appears that several of the posters dont know much if anything about M3s........!

The 4 door is more stiffly sprung and is just as good in terms of handling....

rr_ww 20 September 2003 12:44 PM

I've driven a 4 door M3 (P reg)

was going to buy a 4 door m3 evo but bought an mitsi evo 5 instead.
4 door is softer sprung for comfort.

double vanos is very expensive when it goes wrong on the 3.2 evo over a grand.

scoobysnacks 20 September 2003 08:21 PM

So, 'turboman786' say 'The 4 door is more stiffly sprung and is just as good in terms of handling....' and 'working on it' says '4 door is softer sprung for comfort.'
Come on guys, who is talking rhubarb?

si325i 20 September 2003 11:00 PM

i like rhubarb with custard.

fatherpierre 20 September 2003 11:09 PM

I thought they were more or less the same.

The 4 door is much rarer, slightly longer (obviously) and that's about it.

kenny.c 21 September 2003 02:59 AM

i think the 4 door e36 m3 had less sporty seats than its coupe counterpart..........but i may be wrong...or was it the m3 convertible..........:)

scoobysnacks 21 September 2003 10:40 AM

With regards to their length fatherpierre, I've just found this on one Internet site:
'The two cars have identical length, wheelbase, track, front/rear weight distribution (which by the way is a perfect 50/50) and curb weights'... The plot thickens.

4 door was reputed to have softer suspension as standard, seem one on track & it did seem correct as it was a fair bit more wallowy than a 2 door (yes it was a real M rather thn a badged up 318 etc as I saw it bonnet up) :)

working on it 21 September 2003 02:24 PM

deffo softer, i did heaps of research on them both when i was lookn for 1.

Vtec Abuser 21 September 2003 09:49 PM

Just a boring fact, but... Did you know that there isn't one single pannel the same on the coupe to the 4 door...

fatherpierre 21 September 2003 10:05 PM

Strange, s-snacks.

I'd have thought the 4 door would be a few cms longer.

si325i 22 September 2003 09:11 AM

scoobysnacks 25 September 2003 01:25 AM

Actually, the M3 EVO has about the same performance as standard Supra twin turbo, or STI Impreza once on the move... without needing any turbos! Those clever Germans.
