It's out of warranty so no free Subaru Assistance :( So, which breakdown company is the best to go with?
 • AA
 • RAC
 • Green Flag
 • Subaru Assistance

Attu 19 September 2003 06:07 PM

Im with Green Flag ...havnt had any problems with them at all, then again Ive not had to use them :).
Id go with the cheepest one that gets you home.

There was a report on this in a whatcar magazine or something recently...

AA came overall top being the best for fix rate at side of road and response time.
RAC came a very close second, I think they beat the AA for % fix rate at road and cost of repairs
Greenflag came second from last I think ... they rely very heavily on local garages rather than their own fleet....

I was offered a renewal on my Subaru Assitance for £60. Which included benefits of home start, tow to garage, courtesy car etc.. I thought this better than £100 for the AA equivelant.
Not had to use Subaru Assitance yet (Touch Wood).

jpor 19 September 2003 08:13 PM

Oh.. Yes I have the Subaru Assistance policy. Forgot to add.

BigRed 19 September 2003 08:57 PM

Hopefully we will NEVER have to use a breakdown recovery company:D

I have Subaru assistance on my extended warrenty, not had to use it yet.

Golden Oldie 19 September 2003 08:59 PM

Never needed to use it during the 18 odd months of owning an Impreza which was still under warranty but I now have a 12 year old Legacy which has done going on 120,000 miles.

Needless to say, I want to err on the side of caution :)

X SOOOBY 19 September 2003 09:23 PM

AA without a doubt have used there recovery 3 times in 18 months twice from over 150 miles excellant service every time

whatsisname 19 September 2003 11:01 PM

AA
Fixed Subaru ( hose on turbo off / had just had clutch renewed )
Brought my jag and family home ( transporter over 100 miles )
My daughters mini ( wipers packed up ) transported home .

Well worth the extra

scoobyfella 19 September 2003 11:05 PM

I've just been debating myself, and getting prices as my warranty was running out and wouldn't get Subaru assistance. When i had decided to take AA with 15% of through SIDC, got a letter through the post offering Subaru assistance even though not extending warranty all for £60 which includes home start. Needless to say took that one out straight away, by far the cheapest comparing different cover.

So that's one thing cheap out of Subaru.

James.

Subaru Insured - Roadside Assistance

Brit_in_Japan 19 September 2003 11:17 PM

Something else you may want to consider, breakdown recovery insurance.

When I was in the UK I was a member of GEM, The Guild of Experienced Motorists (don't laugh). They offer breakdown recovery insurance which covers same type of homestart, roadside assistance and breakdown recovery. It works like this, you call a central number, they send out an approved local breakdown van (often AA/RAC independent operators) and pay for the service by cheque or credit card. To recoup your money you put in a claim form, and you get a cheque by return posts.

Used this twice in 10 years of motoring in UK, never a problem and the cost was about half equivalent AA/RAC option. Go to www.gemrecovery.co.uk to check it out.

Downsides:- If you have a string of convictions they won't let you join GEM, you get a monthly magazine with adverts for zip-up fleece slippers and car-boot-tidies.

I was told you cannot have subaru assist unless you have a warranty as it cannot be sold seperately

At least thats what my local dealer told me (Mainland)

I will be mightily pee'd off if you can have it seperatly

Golden Oldie 20 September 2003 08:53 AM

Sorry Sonic :(

Definately does not apply to Euro or Jap Imports:

Please note that Subaru Assistance is only available for vehicles that were originally purchased from a Subaru (UK) Ltd official franchised dealer.
You can have it once your warranty expires as they warn you not to buy it if you have a warranty as the warranty includes it for free:

Please check if you have any balance of Subaru's 3 year new car warranty, Extended Warranty or Subaru Proven Warranty before considering purchasing Subaru Assistance as you may already benefit from this valuable cover.
Think I'll be going for Subaru Assist :)

Scooby96 20 September 2003 09:10 AM

Go get a Lloyds Platinum account and you get free AA cover and Annual Travel Insurance for nowt ;)

Greenflag - Got messed around by them the one time my car had stopped working (I had been with them for 5 years). Very unimpressed.

AA - Been with for the last couple of years, were effective if slow the one time I had to use them.

ScoobyDoo555 20 September 2003 11:08 AM

I've got Subaru Assistance - only used it once. It is an EXCELLENT service :) I'll be renewing it in October.

CEL light came on about 50mile away from home. Limped to my destination. Called them. Within 30 mins they had a low-loader there. Got transported home. Next day another lowloader came and took the carto the nearest dealer (about 30 miles away!)

Courtesy car was dropped off (New Astra SXi)

Only downside was that the 1st lowloader driver did everything wrong  - drove the car onto the lorry (apparently NOT allowed). Then on the voyage home, the clasp on the bindings around the driver's side wheel, rubbed all the paint off the skirt Poor placement :(

However, quick call to Subaru Assistance, and had it sorted whilst at the dealer (FOC) The only arguement was that the recovery company denied all knowledge of it, but on further inspection (I couldn't inspect it that night due to it being pitch black), it was accepted that the transportation had caused the problem. No matter, as it was all sorted :)

Highly recommended service though.

Dan :)

Oh and the CEL was due to a faulty knock sensor - replaced under warrantee :) UK MY99

I would recommend Britannia Rescue,i used to work for a large breakdown /recovery garage and we delt with all of the companies listed above.
Britannia worked out to be the cheapest and had the quicker response times. They don't have their own fleet so pass the job on to the most local garage to where you have broken down.
The AA/RAC and the like also sub out jobs when they are busy...we used to get them when they were 3 hours old and had to take the flak from irrate customers!!

steve.

Golden Oldie 20 September 2003 05:55 PM

Don't you have to be a member of the CSMA (Civil Servants Motoring Association) in order to get Britania Rescue cover?
