hi all
just trying to confirm if cam pulley locking tools are needed for a cam belt change on a uk 2.0 turbo
cheers richie

Its possible to do the job without them, but much easier and a lot safer for your fingers if you do use them.

As Pete says.
I done one without but it was a feckin pain trying to stop the cam wheels from turning.
Not to bad on a double OHC but when youve got 4 of em, its a bastid!

I would make a couple of wooden wedges to lock the cam wheels up. You only need to keep the left hand pair on lift, the right hand 2 stay off lift.

dont risk an old tensioner imho.

reused old styl tensioner should be fine, that is to say I haven't heard of even a old style tensioner failing, second hand or not.

David, what happened to you being a rough cnut? You haven't gone all perfectionist on us have you? ;)

thing is i paid £300 for the car so its a budget project-perhaps £500 300bhp is possible

£300 was that for all the car :D

If you are careful you can use a mole grip to lock the cams that are on lift - line up everything up and then lock it.

I reused my MY99 tensioner - but lesson learned elsewhere would lead me to use a new one!

Rannoch, i know you are going to love me contridicting you :D:D:p;)

Be very careful when using Molegrips on the pulleys, it works perfectly on metal pulleys but will break the plastic ones.
