External or PCI?? Is there an advantage to either? Any make/model recomendations welcome :)
Or would I be better off with a router? I will only be using one pc on this connection. Darren [Edited by Daz34 - 8/8/2003 6:41:27 PM] |

Hello
A router allows you to use all the CPU cycles of your PC, and is much better than PCI (or USB). Steve. |
How expensive is a decent router? Should I get one with a firewall, as I have a good software firewall package already?
Cheers, Darren |
just get a simple adsl router will do. you can always use software firewall. you might want to get one with a 4-port switch as well. have a look at adslguide for hardware review.

i had a pci one for neatness but used to get problems with it
so i had to buy a cheap usb one for 30 quid from pc world. this works fine if you just want one connection you dont really need a router |
Have you signed up yet??
Pipex have a deal on it's about £17 for the BT connection, modem and 2 filters. Oh and if you let me recommend you I get a free month!!! :-) http://www.xtreme.pipex.net/adsl/sales/ Just rated 3rd fastest at ADSL guide. Rank ISP Downstream Upstream Total 1 Eclipse Internet 457.2 Kbps 240.8 Kbps 2280 2 Nildram 453.0 Kbps 235.7 Kbps 2347 3 PIPEX Internet Limited 443.3 Kbps 238.4 Kbps 4537 |
I have looked at their packages but I want a 1mb line which I don't believe they do at the moment :(
Also leaning towards the router option. Like the look of the Solwise SAR715. Anyone got one? Darren |
We got a Netgear RH348 router from ebay. All cables etc included.

I bought a MRI ADSL router with usb and Ethernet (1 port) for £51 inc vat from Scan, and very happy with it I am too.
I'm quite suprised by the functionality on offer for the money, including port redirection, firewall + port filtering, VPNs etc. Cheers, Alex |
