Start off in France, pass briefly through Switzerland, back into France and on up to Chamonix

http://www.alwyngreer.com/italy/chamonix1.jpg

Stop off for light refreshments and then a pose beside the glacier...

http://www.alwyngreer.com/italy/chamonix2.jpg

Then it's into the Mont Blanc tunnel for 11.5 kilometres

http://www.alwyngreer.com/italy/tunnel.jpg

And out the other side into Italy...

http://www.alwyngreer.com/italy/italy1.jpg

http://www.alwyngreer.com/italy/italy2.jpg

Jolly on down the road awhile and into Aosta

http://www.alwyngreer.com/italy/aosta.jpg

Little bit of wearing on the credit card in the shops and we're bang on time for one of these

http://www.alwyngreer.com/italy/pizza.jpg

Turn round and come back home again, just in time for tea :):D:):D

A 3 country trip of about 330 kms. Only took about an hour and 20 mins to get there without the stop over.

Kicker is...FORGOT to play the Italian lottery ARGH !!!! 60 million euros up for grabs.

Might go back Saturday !!!

Big Goon 06 August 2003 06:54 PM

Frenchie, you make me sick ! :p

What an amazing drive, I really envy your location.

Was the pizza any good tho ? looks a bit small for me. ;)

Beefy 06 August 2003 07:45 PM

Now thats the way to spend a Wednesday... :)

STi-Frenchie 06 August 2003 07:46 PM

LOL !

The scenery is breathtaking, the roads are fantastic and to be honest, those offset the pizza which wasn't that good :( we didn't hang around for the gelato (ice cream) in the restaurant either but had that elsewhere. Mind you, can't grouse too much, it was a dirt cheap meal - 6 euros for a full size pizza for which I would normally pay double!

Plenty more restaurants to try in that region :) and next time I might even ignore the kids and head off for the St Bernadino pass after lunch :D

glen4 06 August 2003 08:23 PM

Frenchie
did a similar trip a few weeks ago, except from Caen ! We went through the Frejus tunnel and stayed in a place just a few hundred metres into italy , called Bardonnecia (sp) we were there to do the stella Alpina rally on our Dirt bikes. Scenery was superb.

davek 06 August 2003 08:49 PM

nice pics mate,
did that trip once when going to turin(not in a scoob though).
would like to do it now in the scoob burbling through mont blanc.;)

anyway i did go to burnham on crouch today.......

not quite the same though eh :D

STi-Frenchie 06 August 2003 08:54 PM

Thanks guys.

You know, I was just thinkin' about Big Goon's post and then read the others...I might get the location but YOU guys get to go to the meets, runs and enjoy talking to other english speaking scooby owners. I wish !!!

I suggest scoobynet organize a run through central Europe taking in all the scenery and passing by my part of the continent so I can join in ! :D:D:D

bug-eyed wonder 06 August 2003 09:15 PM

PAH! :p

Give me the Glenshane Pass any day! ;)

STi-Frenchie 06 August 2003 10:15 PM

Heh heh ! I was thinking that I'd love to take my scoob on the back roads between Lisburn and Comber when I was back home earlier this year. Me da said as much as well !

Gav 06 August 2003 10:19 PM

drumsterphil 06 August 2003 11:37 PM

Hey STI-Frenchie, thanks for the pics - Was in Chamonix a couple of years ago and reckon I must have stood in exactly the same place as you as I seemed to have taken exactly the same picture!;):D

Great scenery that you have to see in real life to appreciate the scale (just don't go up to the top of Mont Blanc if you have a phobia of cable cars, as I found out........!)

Boro 06 August 2003 11:43 PM

3rd pic down looks like the Saltash Tunnel :p

Andy Porter 07 August 2003 12:08 PM

I bet you were gutted you went all that way and the pizza was 5hit :D ;)

what would scooby do 07 August 2003 01:04 PM

That scenery just looks the same as Milton Keynes to me ;)

:D:D

cheeseboy 07 August 2003 01:24 PM

Ah, tis tough living in mainland Europe.... with autobahns, open limits, great roads and mtns like these.... :D:D:D

LIDDO 07 August 2003 02:07 PM

I'd love to do that type of run, BUT, with a loud Magnex and bucket seats, I dont know how long I'd last between stops! Anyone else done this type of thing???? in a LOUD car???????

STi-Frenchie 07 August 2003 03:54 PM

I bet you were gutted you went all that way and the pizza was 5hit
Ha Ha ! Yeah, but real Italian ice-cream compensates for just about everything :D:D

Wurzel 07 August 2003 04:51 PM

Frenchie are you available and interested in coming to Prague at the end of this month with a bunch of us, we are going over on saturday 29th to Pilzen meeting up with Velryba et al and then onto Prague on Sunday for some go karting and a play on an airfield etc. Probably some drinking on sat night.

There is a post in International about it.

ian_sadler 07 August 2003 04:55 PM

Lucky, lucky goit ;) :D

scooby-si 07 August 2003 08:09 PM

lol@ boro

that tunnel is the bo11ocks been through that in me wagon would love to do it in the scoob popping and banging :D

Mossman 07 August 2003 11:20 PM

Hey Frenchie!!

I like your style! I love Valle d'Aosta - namely Cervinia, as I have skied there a fair few times. I also lived in Valle Susa - Sauze d'Oulx for two years. Great roads!!

All the best,

Mossman
:):)

STi-Frenchie 08 August 2003 10:54 AM

Wurzel - I'm just finishing off a 4 week vacation and that run looks really good but probably a bit long for me. I'd need to take a day off either side of the weekend if I was going to attempt it!

Mossman - yeah, the roads are great around Aosta, pity about the drivers on them! :) I've driven in Italy before but had forgotten the rule where it says "ignore all stop signs" :)

messiah 08 August 2003 11:40 AM

might do something similar if I ever get a haggis craving.

TVR Gary 10 August 2003 07:26 PM

STI-Frenchie ....... cant believe it I have just done virtually the same run and have the same piccys ..haha ....well down load then in a day or two. I did the ''Ring'' as well though..

Cham and the mountain were awesome. I was there on Thursday

STi-Frenchie 10 August 2003 08:15 PM

TVR Gary - looking forward to seeing your pics :) post 'em up here so folks will get some more ideas of how gorgeous the area is.

Pity I didn't know you were going to be around my little part of the globe :( could've shared our pizza's with you :)

Just saw a little piece on the french news about the glacier at Chamonix...melting quicker than ever in these temperatures. So scoobynetters, get your keys, get your cars and come have a look at it for yourselves before it disappears.

BlackScoobyWRX 10 August 2003 11:10 PM

Save 6 euros on the pizza and put 200 euros in the tank - bargain!!
Great thread - lucky 5od!!

missyc 11 August 2003 12:22 AM

TVR Gary 11 August 2003 11:55 AM

STi- Frenchie....

I agree with you about the glacier melting, you only had to look at the water going through the river in the center of town to realise something was not quite right. I also went to Mount Titlus in Switzerland and took the cable car to the summit .... very strange playing at snowballs in boiling heat.

Can an eye open as i will post the piccys in the next couple of days...

I didnt go alot on the tunnel myself, damned expensive and only allowed to do 60KMH ..... not good ....haha

swisscooby 11 August 2003 02:25 PM

Hey STi frenchie! It's Pete here! Met you in the McD's at Thoiry?
I drive the dark blue WRX on red plates. Good to see you made the trip for the pizzas you were talking about! Looks awesome!
Will have to organize a blast somewhere, would be good to get a few other Scoobs together.

No doubt see you about!

Cheers

Rusty Festa 11 August 2003 03:42 PM

Quality thread :D

Would love to go and play in some real mountains with the Scoob but looks like our trip to Catalunya may well be in the Clio as we need to take it back to Toulouse to get serviced :)
