Wanted to order an ITG panel filter for my MY96 sti. Scoobysport are now saying the green cotton filter is much better for the MAF. What do you guys/gals think?

silver:scooby 27 May 2003 07:27 PM

I fitted a k&n panel filter after taking of the induction kit and found it to drive and pull better with the panel filter, the K&n gets my vote.

coulty 27 May 2003 10:57 PM

thanks for that silver:scooby at least it gives me other options. Anyone else got a view?

Gidney&Knowlesy 28 May 2003 07:11 AM

Have both in stock, though still running ITG on my car

SiPie 28 May 2003 09:19 AM

Had an ITG on my MY99 and then had a bill for £3,567.85 for a new engine...

Think about it :D

7 Foot 28 May 2003 09:28 AM

I'm running a K&N as advised by Merv @ Power Engineering.

and the reason for this is??

wideboyuk 28 May 2003 10:01 AM

Are they on commision ;)

SiPie 28 May 2003 12:36 PM

Boultsy

and the reason for this is
....is probably because the green cotton one is dry and not covered in the green gunk that permeates the ITG one :D

coulty 28 May 2003 12:56 PM

Ah right. Think i will go for the green one, more than 3k sounds scary for a engine! Thanks for your help guys :)
Coulty

boultsy 28 May 2003 01:56 PM

I kinda realised that Si :D and anticipated your reply

but....if they are being quoted correctly by coulty is this an admission that the gooey ITG can cause problems with MAF. I don't think so, so again I ask

chrome 28 May 2003 01:59 PM

I had a ramair panel in (old owner did it) and then had a K&N57i on..
great noise.. but on investigation the Green panel *seems* to be a little better.. (cooler air from flat panel as opposed to hot air from cone filter?)

mayeb If i had boxed in the K&N (and had a cold air pipe into it) it would have been better, but so far the green panel gets my vote.

and yeah- green panel is cotton (dry) unlike most other panel filters.. (oiled)

The big debate was that 'if fitted properly' then the green gunk could not escape to the MAF side but after taking my filter out after 10k and 15k miles on both occasions the green gunk HAD found it's way through to the TOP of the panel filter and therefore under high revs I have little doubt that it COULD get sucked over the MAF

Now...before ITG sue my ass off I have NO way (obviously) of proving this BUT upon cleaning the sensor and housing there WAS suspicious green gunk living all over the MAF.

So having bought a new engine  I decided to trust my own judgement and went back to standard OEM paper filtration :D

I rest my case your honour ;):D

Cheers
Si

I'm with you Si....no gunk sounds best

Gedi 28 May 2003 09:28 PM

anyone got anymore info on this please.

Some of the tuners who frequent this board advised me to get ITG. I know these tuners are not selling ITG at their premisises so it gets me wondering, and also a little worried.

btw, I have yet to get my panel filter so the green filter could be the way forward

blachie 28 May 2003 09:44 PM

I ve been using a jr panel filter from jw for quite some time now on my my00 without any problems or afm issues.very happy with it.

kenny.c 29 May 2003 02:10 AM

anyone tried the official sti dry panel filter ??? sold by scooby mania

Interesting:eek: but it does seem odd then that so many owners appear to have been running without any problems, you must admit that you are in the minority, are you not?

(Si we most stop quoting each other;))

Ken E 30 May 2003 11:34 AM

I had a Green panel filter in my WRX for over 2 years with no problems. Still in it now as far as I know.

Think I have problems with the MAF on my sti now, but don't know what filter is in it, will find out tomorrow.

Edited to change MA to MAF, no problems with my ma !

Green Panels and ITG are the same price, and the green is dry. I have used both, but in different cars. But I must say that the green is alot less hassle, and (according to TSL and MoTeC) flows more air than the ITG.

I would buy a green again if I wanted to mod my car...

Hey Boultsy :D

Naw... lets just keep quoting each other :D:D

The important thing to remember here is that the MAF on MY99's are so sensitive that ANY contamination is likely to screw the MAF's and as Pete Croney has stated on here a number of times..he has heard of numerous MAF's failing on this year of car using standard filtration

So I guess you've just got to take your chance but IMHO something that is so heavily permeated in green gunk doesn't have it's place next to a very easily contaminated and sensitive piece of kit that when failing....can blow up your engine

PS Any gains from the ITG (with light mods) just ain't worth the hassle. They quote an extra 5bhp but I was extremely sceptical re this as it felt like it had slightly more mid-range oomph at around 80ish but other than that it was negligible :(

Pete Croney 30 May 2003 01:05 PM

We have switched to selling Green filters as they are superb.

Not only is there zero risk of MAF damage on 99-00 cars (if an ITG is fitted correctly with any excess splodge towelled off, it is also safe), but the flow rates are excellent.

There is no risk of fitting a Green incorrectly as it is dry and rigid so can only seat correctly.

We made the switch because we think they are better, simple as that.

Well Pete :D

Just ordered one from your goodselves on the above recommendation :)

Now if engine no2 goes pop I'll send you the bill ;)

Edited to say that ITG are still the only filters advertised on your website at present but that obviously ain't all you got in stock :D:D

Cheers
Si :D

Has anyone tried the one from JW Racing ???

Pete Croney 30 May 2003 03:08 PM

Thanks SiPie :)

The web site is scheduled for an overhaul in July, so I'll probably leave it until then.
