needs to be no higher than group 11 or 12 but has to be small petrol and preferably fast but reliable. Around the £1000-£1500 mark. any comment welcome and yes im only young (20)

and it eats flat 4's..

Ciaran 01 April 2003 12:08 PM

i want a car that looks good aswell and that word turbo is not good for my age group unless its a diesel. so anybody else?

malvinas 01 April 2003 12:20 PM

205 GTI 1.6/1.9 or failing that an insurance friendly XS- Autocar rate it the best handling front wheel drive car ever. I rate them both as excellent having owned both.

Ciaran 01 April 2003 12:34 PM

well i have considered them both but iv driven an xs and their pretty slow, im considering a swift gti. cos a mate used to have one and their rapid but does anybody know how they handle??

Dunc20 01 April 2003 12:47 PM

They handle ok! and they are quick...but not 'Rapid' at 101bhp!! Get a J-reg Fiesta XR2I, there are loads in the autotrader for around 1k!

Dunc.

Ciaran 01 April 2003 01:11 PM

ford no

F-fix
O-or
R-repair
D-daily

so not a ford. anybody know what the difference is between a normal swift gti engine and a blue point engine technically that is cos my mates swift used to have a blue point engine and it was realy quick.

ScoobyJawa 01 April 2003 02:25 PM

Erm - there was something wrong with the XS you drove then ;)

The 205 XS was almost as fast as the 1.6GTi, only fractions of a second differences between them :D:D:D

But I'd second that - I'm now on my 2nd 1.9 GTi after a few years in scoob and GTi-6, its a superb car. That money will pick you up a minter, they go real well - suprise a lot of people who think they aren't that quick and the handling is sublime :D:D:D

Another excuse:

Ciaran 01 April 2003 02:39 PM

scooby jawa the xs i drove went fine but i mean it was not fast compared to alot of cars and it is only 0.1s slower to 60 than the gti. but the insurance is mad cos i am only 20 last friday and have 0 ncb!
anybody else??

so so far we have a 1.6 and a 1.4 205 of as options any more anybody?

dogmaul 01 April 2003 03:06 PM

ciaran thing is fast and low insurance dont go together these days

my first car was a fiesta XR2 when i was 19 paid 600 fully comp then got a primera si when i was 19 paid 900 fully comp now at 23 i pay 941 fully comp on a 13k mile clio 172 :D

si325i 01 April 2003 03:08 PM

it's only Group 14. u said 12. what 2 more. when i was 21 i had cavalier 18i CDi. (LOL)if you only spend and grand on a car use the money left over for the insurance. look you can't have fast, and cheap. next you will be wanting 100mpg and a top speed of 150. it's not going to happen is it..

ok then Fiat UNO turbo: Group 11. good fuel mpg 1989 FIAT UNO Turbo 3dr Hatchback

mk2 Golf GTi 8v

Citroen AX GT

AX is group 9 and Golf is 12 (I think) both available under a grand

mike16v 01 April 2003 04:10 PM

You clould pick up a phase 1 Clio 16v for under £2k easy enough I'd have thought... and it is only grp12 insurance.

Don't think you'll get batter than that :D

And I had an XR2i and had no problems with it. It was great fun, especially after I put on 15's and a Spax kit... Don't overlook it, and you can get some low mileage ones too (genuinely low miles before folk shoot me down with tales of clocked cars)

MattW 01 April 2003 05:35 PM

Get the Uno - That is one seriously quick car. I had an AXGT(non injection) once, add a K&N and they go really well.

mozzaITA 01 April 2003 05:42 PM

I bought a Astra GTE 8v for less than £500.... cant go wrong dont be put off by it only being 8v and not 16v as it still goes very well and is dead reliable, mines done 153 000 and no problems.

si325i 01 April 2003 05:56 PM

8v gte i've had three. better that a 16v, had one. loads more low down power..

mozzaITA 01 April 2003 07:11 PM

they are wikid i agree, ive had a astra gsi 16v years ago which was really good and was faster but pound for pound a gte is such good value for money, ok the handling isnt going to win any rallies but its got a decent turn of speed and low down torque for me its perfect stop gap car until i got enuff money for a lancer.

rather have a gte over a pug 205/xr2i etc anyday of the week!
although i feel like im 20 years old again which isnt such a bad thing is it? lol

i've had a capri 1.6 and two XR2's
and when i'm older and got some money i'd love a 2.8i special 1 of of 1040? i think, ever.

Midmotorsteve 01 April 2003 08:02 PM

just got 2nd mr2 as cheap runabout...mk1 'handles better than a 348(think that the model no. ferrari anyway) gtb' autocar 7.7 0-60, £175 tpft 25 year old cost £600 with tax and mot

Ciaran 03 April 2003 11:40 AM

cheers for the help boys but gte's r like rsoles everybodys got one so think it may have to be a swift because at least their not to common.

so any more suggestions welcome must be fairly fast cheap to run and look good?

mozzaITA 03 April 2003 05:41 PM

What about a fiat tipo 2.0 16v??? i saw one for £900... lots of performance for that... mate had one and it was cool

ADL 03 April 2003 06:07 PM

why do you think that there are 20 groups ranging from a mini to a mazerati? Its because there is a mile between the performance between the two. Group 12 is just in the middle, my mazda 323f 2.0 v6 is a group 15, at 26 with 2Yr's NCD insurance is still either 500 tpft or 1100 fully comp. 0-60 in the very low 8's quite a lot of torque. Quick it is, fast it aint. I am looking to spent 12-15k, but will get something quite nice Accord Type-R arwesome handling and fast although not very fast.

RS Grant 03 April 2003 08:26 PM

Uno Turbos are awesome wee cars, although the body panels are so thin you can practically read through them. Buy one and watch it rot away little by little, day by day! ;)

Swift GTI's arent that bad, if your ever through in Perth looks out for a white GTI on 17's, its pretty nippy, I think they are only 1.3's too so wont cost the earth to run! :)

Grant

si325i 03 April 2003 08:39 PM

Aren’t uno galvansied? or did i just make that up. my mate had one years ago mk1 he said his was..?
