needs to be no higher than group 11 or 12 but has to be small petrol and preferably fast but reliable. Around the £1000-£1500 mark. any comment welcome and yes im only young (20)

205 GTI 1.6/1.9 or failing that an insurance friendly XS- Autocar rate it the best handling front wheel drive car ever. I rate them both as excellent having owned both.

They handle ok! and they are quick...but not 'Rapid' at 101bhp!! Get a J-reg Fiesta XR2I, there are loads in the autotrader for around 1k!

Erm - there was something wrong with the XS you drove then

The 205 XS was almost as fast as the 1.6GTi, only fractions of a second differences between them

But I'd second that - I'm now on my 2nd 1.9 GTi after a few years in scoob and GTi-6, its a superb car. That money will pick you up a minter, they go real well - suprise a lot of people who think they aren't that quick and the handling is sublime

Another excuse:

it's only Group 14. u said 12. what 2 more. when i was 21 i had cavalier 18i CDi. (LOL)if you only spend and grand on a car use the money left over for the insurance. look you can't have fast, and cheap. next you will be wanting 100mpg and a top speed of 150. it's not going to happen is it..

ok then Fiat UNO turbo: Group 11. good fuel mpg 1989 FIAT UNO Turbo 3dr Hatchback
FSH, MOT NOV 03, TAX APR, CAT2, New discs&pads all round, New tyres, Pioneer stereo+6 disc shuttle, bleed valve, NO smoke from turbo! Quick motor. LEICESTER. 64500 miles. £950.

You clould pick up a phase 1 Clio 16v for under £2k easy enough I'd have thought... and it is only grp12 insurance.

Don't think you'll get batter than that

And I had an XR2i and had no problems with it. It was great fun, especially after I put on 15's and a Spax kit... Don't overlook it, and you can get some low mileage ones too (genuinely low miles before folk shoot me down with tales of clocked cars)

Get the Uno - That is one seriously quick car. I had an AXGT(non injection) once, add a K&N and they go really well.

I bought a Astra GTE 8v for less than £500.... cant go wrong dont be put off by it only being 8v and not 16v as it still goes very well and is dead reliable, mines done 153 000 and no problems.

they are wikid i agree, ive had a astra gsi 16v years ago which was really good and was faster but pound for pound a gte is such good value for money, ok the handling isnt going to win any rallies but its got a decent turn of speed and low down torque for me its perfect stop gap car until i got enuff money for a lancer.

rather have a gte over a pug 205/xr2i etc anyday of the week!
although i feel like im 20 years old again which isnt such a bad thing is it? lol

why do you think that there are 20 groups ranging from a mini to a mazerati? Its because there is a mile between the performance between the two. Group 12 is just in the middle, my mazda 323f 2.0 v6 is a group 15, at 26 with 2Yr's NCD insurance is still either 500 tpft or 1100 fully comp. 0-60 in the very low 8's quite a lot of torque. Quick it is, fast it aint. I am looking to spent 12-15k, but will get something quite nice Accord Type-R arwesome handling and fast although not very fast.

Uno Turbos are awesome wee cars, although the body panels are so thin you can practically read through them. Buy one and watch it rot away little by little, day by day!

Swift GTI's arent that bad, if your ever through in Perth looks out for a white GTI on 17's, its pretty nippy, I think they are only 1.3's too so wont cost the earth to run!
