Norton Utilities has/had a utility (suprisingly http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif) that could recover deleted files off disk. Each file it found that could be recovered would have a missing first character that you would have to pick. Depending on length of time and if the disk space had subsequently been re-used would govern whether or not the files could be deleted.

Not sure if there is something within windows that would do the same thing http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/confused.gif

ChrisB> if you read what I original wrote, SCANDISK found one of them, i.e a .chk file, as it was a broken cluster!

I am using NTFS on WindowsXP.. I am not a lemming when it comes to the pc, but just need a util, as I aint had this happen to me before!! Well not with an ntfs file system anyway.

HAnslow- i will try that program, have a copy somewhere, but as I stated, I did not delete them- to me seems more like a hard-disk missing clusters etc.. but well it only managed to find one of them!

had some digital pictures of a stag night (only pictures taken) the pictures where on my pc, they are not now.. the pics have not been deleted..

scan disk has found one of them!! anyone know of any programs to find the others??

ChrisB 28 August 2001 12:17 PM

Windows 95 onwards has a file search built in.

Start > Find

If they are off an digi cam, then I would do a search for *.jpg or *.jpeg

You could narrow down the dates on the search if you get a lot of results.

Christian...

Dont suppose you have accidently removed the ntfs permissions off them??

virus checker quarrantined them??

possibly bug in xp as files dont just disappear with NTFS... Autochk hasnt run on bootup recently has it, has I have had that just delete files before as it said there were problems with it....

Do a search for network undelete software... there is some that supports ntfs and can get files back that are not in recycle bin... (been deleted by network clients..)

nope, havent touched them.

they were there, next day they were in the folder.. machine crashed. next day when i went on, folder in place, no pictures in folder.. as i have said no-one has deleted them or anything - my machine, so i would know! it is my home pc, and no-one touches it http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

only by fluke did i see a found.000 dir on my root of c: went inside was one .chk file, about 1.4meg (that is how big each picture is) opened it up, and it was the first picture..

but i have no idea where the others went. extremely annoying.

aghh! foolish me, when i upgraded, left it as FAT32! no luck now is there?

David_Wallis 29 August 2001 10:43 AM

A lot less chance now.. fat32 is better than some but no way as good as ntfs... I would imagine that chkdsk is more ruthless with fat32 files than it is with ntfs as well...

Hang on and Ill have a look to see what tools Ive got in my cd folder...
