Yep I just took the vent surround and gear console out and have just started priming them, think I'll stick 4 coats of primer, 4 coats alu colour and 3 coats laquer.
By the way any one considering this on a my97, you have my deepest simpaphy, man that vent surround was a bitch and I ended up loosing a screw driver down the actual vent and cant get it out, what a sod and why dont they make those wire coat hangers anymore????????????

Looks good so far:D

Let us know how you get on!
I've been thinking about this for a while (just not had the guts to do it yet!!:))

CELL 17 January 2003 07:20 PM

Nick

You have convinced me, im going to do it :D. Where did you get the paint and primer from, how much was it?

Cheers

Chris

Nick200 17 January 2003 07:20 PM

Will do,

I'm putting the laquer on tomorrow and fitting back on sunday so I'll stick some pics up in the evening.

If you want to do it just do it but make sure you have got a bendy screwdriver or an 8mm spanner and a pozi bit. Unfortunatley I didn't. Oh well its done now, cant wait to see finished job...

Man my camera is ****e...

[Edited by Nick200 - 1/17/2003 7:21:29 PM]

Nick200 17 January 2003 07:26 PM

I got a plastic primer that my local motor bits sells also some alu spray and the laquer all for a tenner, also some 800 grit paper, I checked to see if the plastic primer would hold by spraying them up with one coat then trying to scratch it off, it seemed to hold well so I proceeded, It's a pain though because I'm not sure about other paints but the stuff I used takes 24 hours to cure so you have to stick one thin coat at a time 10-15 mins apart, then when you've finished wait 24hrs to spray the colour and so on.
So your car is a right bloody mess inside for 3 days..

Got to be worth it though because the interior is crap...imo

Nick200 19 January 2003 11:19 AM

Hooray its in and looks excellent.

Pics later...

turbo2000 20 January 2003 12:03 AM

looking good m8

stephen30 20 January 2003 12:39 AM

If it's not a daft question how did you get the bit around the vents off. Looks fantastic by the way and I am now very tempted to do mine.

Steve

martin850 20 January 2003 06:57 PM

looks great mate and shall now be giving my MY95 dash a touch of class. Nice one

M0NEY 20 January 2003 07:13 PM

Stephen, on MY95 wrx there are 2 screws under the vents. Take these off and then the rest just unclips

martin850 20 January 2003 07:23 PM

Thanks for that money that was gonna be one of my questions.
By the way tha turbo timer fitted on no probs and works great probalbly c u at some shows next year.

Nick200 21 January 2003 06:10 PM

Yes the two screws under the vent housing are a bi**h it was a struggle but all you need is a 7mm spanner taped with a pozi bit in it then you can pull towards yourself to undo them, believe me its a pain but worth it.

You just have to pull the top then the bottom and sides then pull the whole lot as far as you can, dont be scared to give it a good heave...
Went to TSL to get my sti 4 spoiler, and Paul gave it the thumbs up....

And today I have just took my side skirts off and ordering my paint for sat so thats next..

M0NEY 21 January 2003 08:59 PM

Thats good martin.

Nick, i dont see how your screws were so hard to get out? Must have taken me about 5 seconds. Had the vents in and out the whole weekend. Yours must have been a bit stuck!!

Nick200 22 January 2003 06:30 PM

M8 the actual vents not so bad it was the air control unit fixed to the surround it would only pull out about an inch no matter what I did, I think it was all the attached gubbins but couldn't get to them to move them.

Anyway done now and I've just purchased my red 2pak paint so spoilers next, should be fun....

CELL 24 January 2003 06:17 PM

Nick,

I cant seem to find that aluminium colour paint mate

Can you please let me know who makes it and what colour it says on the tin.

cheers

Chris

Nick200 25 January 2003 09:30 AM

I just picked it up from my local motorbits shop m8, but its HYCOTE acrylic Aluminium...

Telephone them on 0161 627 0983

There you are

CELL 25 January 2003 07:24 PM

Nick, i searched high and low today for that paint, eventually found it in a Bulls eye motorists store :D :D

Halfords stuff just dont seem right to me, im no spraying expert but the stuff they had for primer was a primer/ filler  Also it would have cost more than double for the stuff from halfords.

As you said, under £10 for the primer, the paint, the laquer and the sandpaper :D

Tomorrow im on the case :D

Nick200 25 January 2003 08:20 PM

Lets see the pics when done m8

CELL 27 January 2003 09:40 AM

yep, will do :D

I used the primer last night, going to put the silver on tonight so it should be done by about wednesday.

Did you leave your ashtray black ?

DJ ATOMIC 27 January 2003 12:34 PM

sprayed my my 98 interior last week audi TT alum it looks great just need to finish off the rest of the bits now but its a good improvement on the standard interior would recomend it to any one

give it a try

Nick200 27 January 2003 07:37 PM

Yes I left the ashtray black, wasn't sure how much to do but I still wanted some contrast to it I didn't want everything to blend too much, but saying that I dont know what it would look like I might give it a go I've got enough paint left.

Tell you what do yours then post a pic then I'll decide.......

And you are right it looks so much classier..

Nick200 27 January 2003 07:38 PM

Dpouble post!

[Edited by Nick200 - 1/28/2003 3:41:13 PM]

Nick200 27 January 2003 07:39 PM

Ashtray still black but looks cool, in fact every body should do it, then again we'd all be the same then, not so sure now...

CELL 28 January 2003 11:49 AM

Last night i applied the silver paint to the bits, but i ran out after a couple of coats. I dont think i have quite got the hang of this spraying lark yet

Im going to get some more silver paint today and finish it tonight, then i only need to apply the laquer.

Im going to leave the ashtray too for now, also that small panel at the bottom of the centre console has my clifford alarm switch and led fitted onto it. I could get them off ok but there is another small black think fitted to it too with a wire dissapearing off into the mass of wiring in the dash, so thats going to have to stay black too for now.

As soon as i have finished the job i will get pics up for u to see. I need to clean the interior too first, i cant have u lot seeing how filthy my car is inside ;)

kenny.c 29 January 2003 03:22 AM

I did this last year, but did my ash tray also, thought it was going to be too much but it looked fine.

CELL 29 January 2003 08:27 PM

Kenny,

Hows it holding up? im interested to know how well the painted bits stand up the day to day use of the car?

Cheers

Chris

CELL 30 January 2003 04:41 PM
