My mate just popped round in a new 2Ltr Astra turbo and I have to say I was dead impressed.

It actually felt faster than my scoob and had hardly any lag at all.

Anyone else driven one ?

Just had a race with an Astra GSI (on private lands of course). I was well impressed with how it handled against my type RA. But in the end, superior driving wins.

Had a "play" with one of these on the motorway, wasnt impressed as i just pulled nicely away, the astra just couldnt keep pace ;)
The last one that tried did pass me, i was in 5th at 50mph and accellerating though, he was going though the gears, it took him quite a while to get to where i was so wasnt impressed then either.

Haha very funny. I don't really think a type RA would be beaten by an Astra GSI now would it. All I'm saying is that she can hold its ground. :D

I changed my astra coupe turbo for a scoob a couple of months ago, the astra is not a bad car at all, its let down by poor builds quality and dealers that dont give a toss.

As far as whats quicker, my standard my02 car was no match for the astra apart from 0-60ish and for top speed no scoob with less than 280bhp will top it.

A friend of mine with a derestricted M3 E36 couldnt believe it when he only just crept pass me at an indicated 165mph.

All in the "modified" MY02 that i drive now would run rings around one, except on a motorway, unfortunately for vauxhall this car is a victim of their poor image when really its a very entertaining and user-friendly car.

Well when you have over 70bhp per tonne more than an astra turbo you make mincemeat out of em ;)

Around town/bends no problem scoob wins every time, on motorways the astras low drag factor will enable a higher top speed.

I have a Fiesta and I'd rather peel the skin from my feet and push it accross Bonnerville salt flats whilst listening to deeply dippy by right said fred than drive a Vauxhaul:p

In the summer i had to really push a 911 3.2 Carrera that i was driving to keep up with an Astra Turbo. It did seem to have really good midrange and at first i was caught out in fourth gear and got left behind when we both overtook a lorry!

Driver was a nob though, gave him a thumbs up when we went different ways at a roundabout and he gave me the w@nker sign :(

I guess you could call them fast but no class ;)

Was upto 140kph! Caused much hilarity for those that know anything about bikes.

How?
An R1 can do a 0-60 in about 3 seconds, 0-100 in about 8.
The Astra will struggle to do it in 6 and 15 respectively.
Maybe some trick photography, or like I said originally a crap rider (or one that wasn't trying).

Astra coupe turbo's are slow, end of story ;)
This car just about gets into the 6's to 60 and weighing in at 100kg more than my classic shaped scoob is somewhat heavier (with less power and torque ;)) and isnt really capable of getting under 18 secs to 100 if that.
Now it does have an indicated higher top speed (around 153mph to 144mph) but at what rpm does this come in? (uk cars are capable of hitting 150mph but not for long periods of time).
As for lower drag factor... true but if you have more bhp and torque then that negates the drag factor ;)
As for seeing an E36 M3 pass you at 165mph.... to be honest, id be doing 20+mph quicker than the none evo version at 130mph so it wouldnt really matter as it would be a small dot in the rear view mirror ;) (they are quite gutless really with weight against them and lack of torque).
The astra coupe will struggle against lots of cars out there, its a hot hatch and cars like the civic type r will make mincemeat out of it (clio 172's, leon cupra R's etc will also make mincemeat out of it).
Its not really a quick car.

When the Astra Turbo first came out I took one look at the top speed and knew it I wouldn't like it. Given its power to weight ratio it could have been very quick if they had stuck in shorter gearing. 135mph would have been plenty IMO for a car that size.

Could have sworn the vauxhalls seem to go round corners pretty well.

Oh by the way i have a seriously modded 22B and also have an Astra 888 turbo.
Astra is not a patch on the 22B but my friend has a bugeye with an exhaust and i am sorry to say but the astra is definately a match for the car in a straight line as we have tried all the way to an indicated 150mph and as for its cornering abilities it is simply awesome for a front wheel drive car and would definately rate it better than his bug eye.

Just my two pence worth.
Of course suspension is tweaked a bit on the 888.

TSP1 - VX220's seem to manage ok round corners....

Why do people keep comparing road cars to race cars..... what could you take from a road going Astra and put onto a BTCC Astra? The badge perhaps!

Last year I spent a pleasant afternoon pounding round the Jerez GP circuit lap after lap in several Astra Coupe turbos, courtesy of Vauxhall:D

Impressed with being flown there as a freebie on a private chartered jet by Vauxhall (cheers chaps:D ) - but not too impressed by the Astra:(

Eventually took one back with melted tyres - the only time it was much fun to drive as it dialled out the terminal understeer and four wheel drifted instead.

Oh, and the comment re the race car? The Egg car was out on track at the same time, and for some reason it left my car for dead;);)

Also got chauffered round in a VX220 by Jason Plato, and had a hilarious three or four laps looking out of the side window at the track in front:D

Well, Vauxhall do benefit from Lotus engineering as far as handling goes. And anyone can build an engine that will propel a car fast enough in a forward direction (Vauxhall definitely have.. Lotus Carlton is an example). That ugly VX thing is apparently very very good in the handling department and is reasoanbly quick too.

That said, I'm not ever likely to change my Scooby for either or any Vauxhall. Not yet found one to trouble me - although I have played with a Lotus Carlton.

PS. I've had 3 Cavaliers in my time (fortunate/unfortunate, make up your own mind) the last of which was a J plate 130bhp model which I sold as the deposit for Scooby.

It was capable of accelerating well past the speedos indicated maximum 140mph on the Autobahn and with 16" rubber being the only handling mod, it was a suprisingly tight and tidy handler.

If you look at the vauxhall's power to weight ratio its around 141bhp per tonne, a classic non modified uk car is 177bhp per tonne and that does make a difference ;)
Now my cars over 210bhp per tonne so given that to a vauxhall and thats 70bhp per tonne more, makes for light work of said vauxhall ;)
I dunno where you got the RUF 911 from though :confused: as i dont think that many cars could keep up with one of those (except co55ies cosworth of course :rolleyes: ;))
