Which does everyone recommend please....... and no offence, but I'd rather hear the views of people who have had experience of several clients (or are in-the-know) ;)

I don't want Norton or McAfee. Cost not a problem up to £100

The virus software must have email scanning capabilities, though.

Thanks in advance.

i have always used mcafee, but have some experience of norton too. However I have heard very good things about AVG, so that might be worth a try if you dont like the others.

IanW 05 November 2002 08:32 AM

Just go for McAfee, Its only about £30 for a home user.

I personally wouldn't run anything else.

BuRR 05 November 2002 09:04 AM

I've just tried Kaspersky (AVP) and its pulled 3 files that both Norton and McAfee missed :(

JackClark 05 November 2002 09:14 AM

Most likely because you've just downloaded the latest version of AVP, simple as that.

ChrisB 05 November 2002 09:14 AM

I'm in the know ;) and I use McAfee.

Were/are you running the latest DATs for Virus Scan?

BuRR 05 November 2002 10:36 AM

Yes - very latest - auto-updated the McAfee directly before the scan.

ChrisB 05 November 2002 10:42 AM

Very strange. Do you know what viruses it pulled out?

IWatkins 05 November 2002 10:49 AM

Use Sophos, I've used it for years and if kept up to date I've never had a virus slip through.

Of course, Jack will be along in a minute to tell us we are all wrong :D

Cheers

Ian

Hupigeon... and others.

I'm now under the impression that these have been dumped on the system overnight (since the previous scans). God only knows how they got on there, but they have :(

I'm now assuming I've got a serious security breach and have taken the PC offline. I'm going to research all the viruses that have been identified and take necessary steps in eradicating them from the registry.

Also, anyone got any views on Tiny Personal Firewall 3?

beemerboy 05 November 2002 04:14 PM

SOPHOS, SOPHOS AND SOPHOS!!!!

Mc afee is a fooking virus!!!!
so is Norton 2002, which has screwed up loads of pc's
- even to the point of quaratining a port required my outlook to pop mail!!!!!

WTF.....

SOPHOS!!!

however, i will be using trend micro next month, but cannot recommend it as i havent used it yet!!!

BB;)

dsmith 05 November 2002 04:32 PM

Time to lay off the caffeine I think Beemerboy ;) :D

beemerboy 05 November 2002 04:39 PM

erm.... yeah , oops sorry, just read my post back to myself.

what it should read is:
"I have used Sophos for many years and not had any problems!!!"

thx

I use E-Trust

Chris L 05 November 2002 06:34 PM

I use McAfee - the web based version which is very good. It updates with no problems and also prompts breaking news on new virus threats etc - highly recommended and effective as far as I can tell. We use McAfee and Trend at work - Trend is very good. Their update service is very good. We have SLAs in place for customer AV servers that mean we have to have new patch files available on our main AV servers within an hour of a threat being identified. Trend was one of the few companies that could manage this.

BuRR, feel free to email me at jclark@nai.com if you need any advice.

Oh yeah, Sophos sucks!! :D

BuRR 05 November 2002 10:22 PM

This thread seems to say what my problem is, Jack. Any thoughts on the matter, please?
