Not to let a weekend go by without doing something to the car, this weekends project was painting the brake callipers. I also had other motives for doing it as I'd seen when I changed the pads how severely corroded (see the pitting in the "during" pics) the sides of the callipers you can't see were so wanted to get a protective coating on them. Just so happens it looks cool too :D:D:D:D Ended up taking me the whole damn day to do it though  but took the chance while the wheels were off to give them a good clean and polish all over too :D Here's the pics:

gadget kev 22 September 2002 06:49 PM

i keep meaning to do the same.
where did you get the paint from m8.
is it the special caliper paint ?

Scott W 22 September 2002 06:55 PM

Mate, they look superb. :D Fancy doing the same to a wagon! ;):p:D

stef555 22 September 2002 06:57 PM

all you need to do now is make "subaru" and the two stripes white, that will finish it of very well.

Chris_D's

Red and white look the DOG'S!!!

Now where did i put that brush!

ScoobyJawa 22 September 2002 08:04 PM

Kev - yep I used the special calliper paint from FoliaTec, I got it from Ripspeed in Halfords for about 21 quid. Contains a brake cleaner, paint and paint hardener. Its supposed to be brake dust/fluid, oil, heat etc resistant. Basically clean up the callipers with wire brush, spray on the cleaner wipe, spray again leave to dry then paint on the paint, leave for 15 mins and apply a second coat. Leave to dry for 2 hours before putting the wheels back on, then the car has to stand for 24 hours for the paint to harden.

Scott - cheers mate :) you'll see them in the flesh on Thurs if not before, I was unsure before I started but after seeing Rich Wilds brothers car and the finished result I think they look great in red :D So thats another cheapo mod of mine you like ;) :D

Hi Stefan/Chris :) - I did think about that but I'm not sure I'd like to highlight the Subaru logo, I like it the way it is. Might give it some time and possibly do it in the future - I also ran out of time to do it this w/e!!! :)

Krade 22 September 2002 09:09 PM

Looks Great Jawa :)

I may do this aswell not that Im copying you what with the red rear tint aswell :) I might go black with the claiper and gold or white lettering

AndrewC 22 September 2002 10:24 PM

I went for the subtle look, black calipers, silver lettering:

Looks better in the flesh - especially when clean!

Edited to say: painted with 4 coats of hammerite smooth finish which I already had in the shed - total cost - 1 evening crawling to my good lady to do the lettering for me as she is sooooo good at stuff like that:D

Neil,

How do you find the 4 pots with the EBC disks. I've got the 2 pots with EBC disks and they are MINCE. I know that 2 pots are pants but just wondered how you find the EBC setup, cause I don't rate my set.

ScoobyDoo22b 23 September 2002 03:38 AM

Very very nice. Red and silver look damn cool. I'd have to say gold looks better, like on the 22b. U should do the piping under the bonnet next;).....

gadget kev 23 September 2002 08:08 AM

cheers ScoobyJawa

may endup trying the smooth hamerite, i think you can get that in diff colour.

gadget :)

ScoobyJawa 23 September 2002 11:23 AM

Krade - cheers, lol!! re the copying ;) I did think about that black/gold would look quite good and similar to Brembo or AP type callipers :D

caz1562 - you don't wanna know my opinion of the brakes ;) lol!! Seriously though, I had EBC reds and the turbogroove discs and IMHO the setup was u/s, didn't work from cold and not too well from hot either. I've now got DS2500 pads in which are superb, but think they've warped the EBC discs (I warped 2 sets of EBC discs with their own greens pads too  ). So IMHO you get what you pay for and the fact that EBC brakes are so cheap speaks volumes.

ScoobyDoo22b - hmmmmm, I thought maybe black lettering but I think you're right, silver would look well cool - cheers!!! :D Re the piping, already got the Samco Turbo hoses ;) I'll have to get the coolant set at some point!!!! ;)

gadget - no worries, the key is the prep of the calliper, after that don't think it really matters on the type of paint providing it withstands the heat etc :)

fester 24 September 2002 03:54 PM

looks brill i have a my98 in red and cant decide what colour to do them ive tried to find a scoob in red with them done but cant find one

NM 25 September 2002 01:26 PM

You can use Engine paint from Halfords for about £4 a pot, just clean down the calipers and apply :-)

You dont have to use the expensive stuff.

Cheers

Neal

Krade 25 September 2002 01:49 PM

Hmm Silver my95 car Gold Six spokes.
Heres my choices, Do I go
Red caliper White lettering?
Dark Blue Cal White lettering?
Black Cal White or silver lettering?
Gold Claiper with Black lettering?

edit Hopefully temporary as I want to upgrade braks and discs at some point.

Deffo Red callipers and white lettering. :)

Grts. Stefan

Jonny C 27 September 2002 02:25 PM

Love the look, got a silver MY93 and this would look very nice.

Quick question, is the painting done with the calipers still in place (i.e. not removed)? If so is this hard or fairly straight forward?

Many thanks

CHRIS_D 27 September 2002 04:11 PM

i did mine when they were off whilst waiting to be fitted

however, i dont see why you couldnt do it with them on, just give em a really good clean etc etc

BTW silver car, red with white writting

ok so im biassed:D:D, but it looks cool

ScoobyJawa 27 September 2002 06:00 PM

As you can see mine were still on the car when I did them. It was ok - a bit tricky on the back-side of them but I managed in the end!!!

Red with white lettering mate - don't want you copying me ;) :p :D

^OPM^ 29 September 2002 02:29 PM

when it comes to painting the white lettering on to the red paint -do u also have to use heat resistant paint there i guess so-if so whats best to use as i dont wanna buy a big pot just for a little bit so what did u use-radiator enamle lol thats heat resisitant and white....

CHRIS_D 29 September 2002 04:38 PM

i used a small tin of hamerite white paint

its heat resistant anyway

BTW you'll use about as much paint as what is on the lid when you open it

chris

^OPM^ 29 September 2002 04:42 PM

ScoobyJawa 29 September 2002 07:13 PM
