Anyone done this, have any advice , reccomendations , costs etc.
Very interested in taking this further, but need to know any pitfalls... Currently have an offer of a multipoint injected system with a 92 lt tank ( fitting in spare wheel hole) for about 1.5k. fitted. Sounds a lot but when you do 100 miles a day just for work!, the prospect of it costing me about £40 a week is v.nice. All advice , comments welcome. I've emailed Shell to ask if there are any issues with running turbocharged engines on autogas. I'll post their reply here when (if?) I receive one.

The current LPG system uses a carburettor-style vaporiser, to deliver the fuel into the airflow. This system works fine, but can't cope with the massive pressure (airflow) increases of a turbo'd engine. Couple this with the odder nature of the Subaru flat-4, and it just doesn't work :( The good news is that the injector-based system, which is currently on test in about 4 Impreza turbos (and 1 WRX, I believe) works fine with the turbos. So, either be patient (a couple of months) or buy a normally aspirated one. Personally, I'd wait ;) By the way, I'm driving a Legacy 2.5 on LPG and have been very happy. The guy who converted my car is in the process of converting his 2.5 Legacy to the injector system and we're going to do some compare and contrasts, when he's done. I've spoken to a guy in High wycombe ( Bucks) and he is 100% confident that a Testoni?? Italian kit can accomodate Turbos without issue, install price was however 1500+vat installed, he very helpful and very very positive, 2 days to sort it out with a loan car too.
he also mentioned it was 90% transportable so when you sell up you can take it with you bar a few nominal items and have it installed in the next car :) |
Yup - that's the system which is being trialed on Impreza's at the moment. Still issues with mating it to the ECU, but it's a continuing process.
Spoke to Jo yesterday and he's still setting his system up. Once that's done (couple of weeks) then I should be taking my Legacy up there for some comparisons |
Mike S_14 is running LPG on his 200SX. And he is pushing out a fair bit of BHP !

There is no reason why it should not be OK, but many companies do not offer this as an option. I suggest you try Powertorque on 02476 635757. Whatever you do make sure it is a multipoint system and that the tank has a pressure relief valve. He is 100% plus positive of their kits use on Turbo's (although he hasn't done an Impreza yet!) I personally think the issue will come doen to ECU rather than anything else. As shell suggest , multipoint + release valve are part of this kit. Email from him below....
