How to identify EJ207 block from EJ205

Hi Guys,

Can anyone confirm to me how to identify an EJ207 block from an EJ205 block?

I'm talking V5/V6, so the EJ207 from those cars will be open deck blocks, so that rules out the easiest way to tell many blocks apart.

TIA!

QUICK EJ20 QUESTION... ??? - ScoobyNet.com - Subaru Enthusiast Forum

Thanks, but there's nothing in that thread to help identify an EJ207 block...

It's mostly the components in the block not the block itself unless it's a newage ej207

How do I tell from the components visually though? I can't find any info online for this despite there being lots of posts about it (95% being about newage blocks).

Pretty sure my EJ207 says "EJ207" on it, or maybe I am thinking of the badge under the bonnet :wonder:

It's dark now but if you don't get it figured out by when I get up tomorrow, I'll go check for you

Have you a short engine or two block halves.

I’ve got one short engine and one block in two halves.

No, they’re all stamped EJ20. Well, the Classics certainly are, not totally sure about the new age models, but I think it’s the same for all.

I have found info on the different stampings, which I assumed would be the key, but for the V5/V6 all the stampings are the same for both WRX (205) and STi (207), which isn’t very helpful.

As per the thread in the link above, the engine code is printed on the sticker on the cambelt cover, but A. The start of the engine code has rubbed off the sticker on both the engines I have and B. The cambelt covers could be off any engine originally and there’s nothing to say the engine code still relates to the engine they’re fitted too.

As I said it is mostly internal components and John Felstead has also told you the same on Type ra :thumb:

But how do I tell from the internal components?

I don’t believe there’s a visual difference in the pistons. I believe there may be a visual difference in the crank, but what exactly? Does anyone have a photo of an EJ207 Crank against an EJ205? Or whatever else will show me where the difference is.

I’ve been given a fully detailed breakdown of every variant of piston now, so I’ll be able to check.

I'm just putting this in so that people can see what you mean by your comment The differences of the later Newage versions below are

Above EJ205 cross section web support only at 9 and 3 O'clock

Here the Newage EJ207 , With its supported cross section at 3, 6, 9 and 12

I've now positively identified both engines I have.

One was an EJ205 and the other was an EJ207, which is what they both should have been respectively from the information I was given, so good news.

EJ207 had visibly different pistons marked as HF-1, which is correct.
