Thank you pat.

Any differences between the '5' and '7', or is 5 = MY99, 7 = MY00, or something?

EJ205 is a designation for a "normal" engine, eg UK Turbo 2000, doesn't matter if it's MY99 or MY00 (but see below).

EJ207 is normally a designation for an STi engine, eg STi 5/6, again it doesn't matter if it's MY99 or MY00 (but see below).

The complete engine code will tell you exactly what it is. For example, an EJ207DW2PR is an STi6 engine, the "2" bit tells you about the generation of the engine, 2 being the second incarnation of the Boxer Master4 Phase II engine, and therefore fitted to the STi 6.

The other characters tell you about stuff like the power steering, aircon and the type of head (WRX, STi etc).

It is also interesting to note that a) the year code in the engine designation did not reset when Phase 1.5 came about, ergo an STi4 engine is an EJ20KDW7PR not EJ20KDW2PR as you might expect. Also, b) the year code in the engine designation did not reset when the New Age Impreza was release, so an MY03 STi engine is an EJ207DW5CR.

Cheers,

Pat.

Right. So...

Phase 1.5
MY97: EJ20K- -7- -
MY98: EJ20K- -7- - (strange anomally - not changed to '2')

Phase 2
MY99: EJ207- -7- -
MY00: EJ207- -2- -

What about the Phase 2 'normal' WRX/GT/GT Turbo/Turbo 2000 AWD EJ205? Does that follow the same rule as the EJ207 re. the change in MY, too?

Am I barking up the right tree?

Am I barking up the right tree?
Not quite :

MY96 STi 2 - EJ20GDW5PR
(change to Phase 1.5 - NO reset of year field)
MY97 STi 3 - EJ20KDW6PR
MY98 STi 4 - EJ20KDW7PR
(change to Phase 2 - reset of year field)
MY99 STi 5 - EJ207DW1PR
MY00 STi 6 - EJ207DW2PR
(change to New Age Bug Eye, NO reset of year field)
MY01 STi 7 - EJ207DW3CR
MY02 STi 7 - EJ207DW4CR
(change to Blob Eye / twin scroll, NO reset of year field)
MY03 STi 8 - EJ207DW5CR
MY04 STi 8 - EJ207DW6CR
MY05 STi 9 - EJ207DW7CR
(change to Hawk Eye, NO reset of year field)
MY06 STi 10 - EJ207DG8CR
MY07 STi 10 - EJ207DG9LE

The EJ205 should follow the same pattern, yes. But note, that EJ207 can also be applied to WRX-RA engines: so an MY99 WRX-RA engine would be EJ207DW1KD or EJ207DW1KE. Also, there is some oddness because you get EJ205DW1KE in MY99 WRX Wagon, it seems the sedan gets an EJ207 designation, which seems odd.

Cheers,

Pat.

So which gasket set do i need for a UK MY97? Cannot find one for a EJ20K and cannot afford £400 to buy both sets and use the bits I need out of both...as has been suggested elsewhere.

Sorry for the highjack......

Thumbs up

Brilliant, I get it now - the helpful list illustrates the logic.... Apart from, as you say, the engine code change for MY97/98, when you would expect MY97 to revert back to 1 and MY 98 to 2 (instead of continuing on from a different engine code i.e. from the previous MY96 v.2 STi's '5' designation, ergo 6 and 7 ).

Thanks for taking the time out to post all that info up - appreciate your patience (prob worth getting this thread into "Archived Topics"...

Just a quick one... Is the full engine code on the block anywhere, or only on the VIN plate?

MY97UK engine will need a gasket set for an EJ20K, available from your Subaru dealer or any of the specialists who undertake engine repair work / supply engine components....

Engine code is on the bottom left hand corner of the central cam belt cover on classics and on the back of the cylinder heads (facing bulkhead) on the New Age...

Cheers,

Pat.

Ok, so can you tell me about my EJ205NW1KE engine? It's in a RB5. I was told that it is a CDB. Is there any truth to that?

Well, the EJ205 is effectively the non-STi spec MY99/00 motor (which is correct; as the RB5 is a UK car).

Not sure on what type of block it is though?

Awesome thread revival though - I applaud you on your searching skills (rather than just posting a thread off the bat).

So no code if you were to purchase just a block/short motor from a newage ?

Shouldn't be a CDB.

Micky, are all MY99/00 block castings the same?

If so, which type - ODB or SCDB?
