It's not just about the money. For example, the Mrs has been stuck with me for over 20 years now. She stopped work at times to have two kids and spend the first years at home with them. Whilst not earning money she has more than contributed her share of building and running the home, so should we split, she'll be entitled to half, even though she'd paid nothing towards it. I'm sure I'd be bitter and twisted about it should it ever happen (and it nearly did a couple of years ago), but sat here today, I see no reason at all why she shouldn't have half of everything - and that's how courts and lawyers view it AFAIK.
The killer would be my pension pot, but applying the same logic again, she was unable to work due to banging out and bringing up the kids, and therefore hasn't built up a fraction of what I have.
