Rear clunking

I replaced the rear diff bushings last month, but the clunking is still there.
Rear suspension was refurbished last year, so I'm dismissing that.

I think I'll try the rear drop links next, what have you lads replaced them with? Any links?

I don't mind changing parts bit by bit as I need to replace most of them at this stage

Have you checked the exhaust for broken hangers?

Buzzer2017 14 August 2018 11:46 AM

Yes. Not the exhaust hangers

When do you get the clunking?

Buzzer2017 14 August 2018 03:06 PM

When changing gears, seems like the left rear.
Ordered drop links this morning , cheap parts and see if that make a difference

Try torqueing up rear driveshaft nuts.

Mine was cv joint on the passenger hub side rear after replacing all bushes shocks top mounts etc etc on my last bugeye so ive changed all the bits on the current impreza bit by bit....allready

ZANY 15 August 2018 03:08 PM

I wonder if replacing rear bushes for harder ones would make it clunk?

Buzzer2017 16 August 2018 09:30 PM

Droplinks fitted today and she is still the exact same. Onto the next area.

Markyscoob 18 August 2018 09:09 PM

Definitely check rear hub nut torques. It's a known thing on 100pcd cars to loosen up over time.

Buzzer2017 18 August 2018 09:54 PM

It's a 5x114 widetrack

Still worth checking IMHO. A clunking on changing gear is almost certainly drivetrain related rather than suspension. You've got engine mounts, gearbox mounts, Diff mounting and driveshafts/hubs. The only one that is known to give problems is the rear driveshaft hub nuts. I would say it's a no brainer to get them torqued up to check. Parts required nil. Just time and tools.

Elimination of possible problems should be done in the order of simplest to get to and cheapest first.

If these brackets get bent, you can get knocking between gear changes:
