Knocking noise

Hi all filled up with super unleaded instead of the usual normal unleaded this morning and the engine is knocking loudly since?!i have a hawkeye wrx,is this because of the detonation being out of sync because the ecu is used to normal petrol?tia

Vxr2010 20 March 2018 03:00 PM

using super unleaded instead of normal wont make it worse, it’s more the other way round , i heard all subaru turbos should be run on sul any way ? , i’m thinking not running on sul all the time maybe your issue , any chance of hearing the noise and where it’s coning from , mileage of car plus service history and has it been mapped ?

Hows the oil level. Putting in better petrol shouldnt be any issue.

Micheal any update on your knocking noise ?

JDM_Stig 22 March 2018 11:20 AM

How long have you been using super market low grade fuel for ?

Vxr2010 22 March 2018 05:09 PM

That’s what’s worrying me the type of fuel used , is it supposed to be SUL and not regular UL ?

WRXrowdy 22 March 2018 05:46 PM

My blob wrx has sticker inside fuel cap, use 98ron fuel only so running it on normal unleaded won't be doing it any favours.

Vxr2010 22 March 2018 05:54 PM

I personally feel running it on standard unleaded has killed it and it’s given up the ghost , im sure they are supposed to be SUL even the WRX

WRXrowdy 22 March 2018 06:01 PM

Yes, as said above mine is only wrx and has to run sul.
Other thing that worries me, if op is not using the correct fuel, is he also topping the oil up with mineral oil instead of fully synthetic.

Vxr2010 22 March 2018 06:04 PM

The oil he’s using is not a great idea but the fuel is likely to be the culprit , ive always used SUL in all my cars wrx or sti , even a mapped n/a holden says use SUL , runs better plus better fuel economy and my understanding was that was the correct fuel any way

WRXrowdy 22 March 2018 06:10 PM

I didn't say he was using mineral oil, just said I worry that he might be as well as using standard unleaded.

Vxr2010 22 March 2018 06:16 PM

sorry my error misunderstood that , not the first post of ...i am using normal unleaded and it’s now not working , fingers crossed for him or it’s a big build on the way
