PC keeps dumping a wired ethernet internet connection?
Brand new router, booster fitted by Virgin yesterday. No problems wirelessly, both phones, the laptop and a pad connect perfectly.
But my desktop keeps dumping the connection, despite it being an ethernet wired one, and refuses to connect until I do a restart. The computer is shut down every night. It's an Acer AX3960, running Windows 10, 4 GB DDR3, i3 2100 processor, 1TB hard drive. Any ideas guys? |
If your lucky it could just be a dodgy Ethernet cable, sometimes the pins come out of the plug, try another cable from PC to router first, otherwise it might be a mobo issue with the Ethernet port itself, assuming it has always worked in the past.

As above or driver issue.
I've had issues with Realtek branded Ethernet controllers that do this after a rogue auto-update. Can't remember exactly how I fixed, but it did involve downloading new drivers (or older ones), uninstalling them and reinstalling. That sorted it...until Windows did another sodding update  Rather than re-booting I found if you went into control panel and disabled the Ethernet card, waited a few seconds and then re-enabled it, it would kick it into life. |
Given it is a new Virgin router you could always try giving them a ring. Was it Ok before the changes they made ??

Not something stupid like power saving mode on the adapter settings is it?

Connect it wirelessly ?
( for 6 quid ) |
But why, dpb?
SURELY a wired connection is seamless and faster? |
Stop faffing about, have you tried another cable or not yet? takes a few seconds to rule that out.
|
Must be the physical side of it cable / where it plugs in
or software driver or a setting somewhere |
Haven't another ethernet.
Means going and buying one.... Locally, £££££ I'll have to order off ebay. And it being W10, I've zero idea how to get into settings to look at stuff like drivers, etc:) |

Thanks pross. The computer says there are no probs with the driver and it already has the best one for the application.
I'm about to order a new ethernet cable. |

Have you assigned a fixed IP address which resided in the new routers DHCP range?
Anything in the event log? kick off a "ping -t bbc.co.uk" and see if the line stays active. If it drops, did you do anything at the time? |
Went into https://redirect.viglink.com/?format...-in-windows%2F when it did it this morning.
It said everything was OK, but it couldn't start the driver. I asked it to check hardware and it came on straight away. |

Click Windows icon
Type: cmd click on the dos box in the dos box type ipconfig /all > c:\ip.txt Browse to your C drive and copy & paste the contents of ip.txt in here. In the same dos box type ping -t bbc.co.uk Leave it running. |
Thx, will have a go later when I've done me chores...
