Good morning! I'm new

Well actually, I'm Steve - and I'm only new 'here'... I've been around a bit.

Currently driving a 2008 Legacy 2.0 REn sportstourer. It's just the bog standard n/a engine, with a wapping (advertised) 165bhp; but it does have a massive boot, fancy heated leather seats, shiny HIDs, factory satnav, AND electric folding mirrors :thumb:

Owned it for a bit over a year, and have ended up spending loads replacing the suspension, some dents, a costly 120,000 mile service, and recently the exhaust... and am just a bit fed up of spending all this money but still only having 165bhp.

But to be honest, it's a great car, and I can't really fault it at all (aside from lack of turbo and boxer burble).

Originally bought it as a family wagon, our only car to cover all bases - and it does the job perfectly.
But a change in circumstances meant wifey needed to commute by car, so she bought a little 49mpg ****roen C1; meaning the Leggy has been sidelined for weekends, or when we need to carry more than a single bag of shopping. :lol1:

Anyway, a recent annual insurance renewal quote may well price me out of Legacy ownership, and I'm contemplating a lateral move through the Subaru range to an Impreza wagon.
Need to get a few more quotes on the Leggy from specialists, as high-street insurers are giving silly quotes now considering the car is "modified" after I swapped out a leaky front shock for upgraded Bilsteins.

Ideal Impreza would be a blue, unmolested, blobeye WRX wagon, ideally with PPP as well, and heated leather seats too (if being picky).
I'll be keeping my eyes peeled, and in the meantime browsing here for research on the engine and potential problems with the marque.

Oh, and I'm just in the murky zone where London meets Essex. You'd think I'd see loads of Subarus because Essex, but they're kinda rare, despite there being a dealership only a few miles away.

Anyway, thanks for having me :)

Hi Minx?

Welcome. I have just insured another Impreza via APlan for £340 all mods declared. Can't remember who I'm actually covered by but it's not a bad price. Sure others have done better. If you can aim for a JDM. I know people go on about UKs being arse etc but it's really only when you drive one V the other you really get it. They are superior cars & worth the extra cash if you can manage it.

again welcome 👍🏼

InsolentMinx 04 September 2017 01:02 PM

Thanks for the welcome!

I've actually decided to stick with the Legacy for the time being, although I *will* own an Impreza at some point!

Managed to talk to a few brokers once I was closer to the renewal date, and was able to get a deal that I'm happy with - paying less that I did last year.

Plus I recently had to replace the exhaust from the CAT back, as well as just this weekend fitting new front discs and pads... So I feel like the car at least owes me another year, seeing as I've had to spend so much on it.

I'm kinda sad that I won't be getting a 'new' car, and that I've had to spend more money on the Legacy; but at least happy that I don't have to pay more for my insurance this year, and that the car is now driving and stopping perfectly again.

My next plan is to get her in better shape, and to get to a few Scooby/Legacy meets.

R666ORY+1 04 September 2017 02:24 PM

The guy I bought my JDM from has a JDM legacy. It's mint. He's modded it subtly and it shifts, bit of a sleeper. If I needed a bigger car it would be what I would go for. It has been mentioned on here but there are some really good limited versions cutting about. Nice looking car you have 👍🏼.

InsolentMinx 04 September 2017 02:32 PM

The JDM turbo ones are very tempting, they look great too with the bonnet scoop.
UK 3.0 Spec B is a bit more sleeper-ish with a plain bonnet, but no turbo.

I'm not sure if I'd prefer a turbo Legacy or Impreza. Both look great but will have very different personalities.

I think i managed to find a pic of yours from your other R666ORY ID.
It looks great!

The Legacy is a bit big, but never have to worry about not having enough boot space :D

Welcome! Nice car.

Thanks BrownPants :)

Nice leggy! It looks in good shape.

Cambs_Stuart 05 September 2017 07:06 PM

Also, from experience the leggy and the wrx wagon are very different cars. The impreza is much louder, more nimble and responsive. The leggy is much more quiet, refined, comfortable and practical.

I love the blue+gold combo, definitely a car I'd like to own at some point. :thumb:

Thanks!
Yes, I imagine they're quite different beasts. I do enjoy the more 'mature' feel of the Legacy, but I'd naturally like to experience a taste of the rally heritage from which it was born.

Trooper,

That is a beautiful looking example. It must be (I'd imagine) the very best of both worlds. Think I'm buying a FSTI next but that is a very close second. For me the draw is they appear like just another estate to the uneducated but their potential and sleeper potential is epic. Without sounding like a broken record! Best colour as well! The football team my lad plays with has another dad with one and me and my boy always check it out due to it's slightly elevated class status and great sound we only expect from an Impreza 👍🏼

I had a Foggy SG STi a while ago. Super grunty, many Impreza parts are interchangeable BUT it is smaller inside than the Leggy. I have had numerous Impreza's GC8 and Newage, mostly JDM.
To compare the two I would call the Leggy a "gentlemans express" and the Foggy a tall Impreza.
But I do like the twinscroll yowl :D

BrownPantsRacing 06 September 2017 10:34 AM

Won't go wrong with a FSTI. I went from a hawkeye impreza to the FSTI and I love it.

Now that's a Beast! Rare sight on the road and for me has great presence. That looks very smart indeed. Just out of curiosity how does it handle in comparison to the Hawkeye Brownpants? I know you can do a hell of a lot with them but I'm assuming they have their limitations due to varying diffs, no DCCD. I think I'm right in saying (please correct if I am wrong) but it would be in affect similar to a none widtrack STI underneath give or take?

Thank you. To be completely honest I don't know how a standard one of these handles as mine came to me with all the original worn suspension bushes and "upgraded" Pedders Ezifit SG lowering kit suspension struts and springs. I was never 100% happy with the suspension as it just didn't seem to handle as well as my hawkeye and was never as predictable. I quite like a bit of tail slide action to level a car through the twisties and I found the pedders just too soft and found them to give too much understear.

So I threw thousands at it in a short space of time and upgraded everything! :D It's now running 360bhp with loads of suspension upgrades such as: Superpro front ARB bushes, Superpro steering rack mounting bushes, Whiteline camber bolts all round, Whiteline 22mm rear adjustable ARB, Whiteline rear subframe locking bolts, Whiteline heavy duty ARB chassis mounting kit, Whiteline solid ARB links front and back, MeisterR Zeta CRD+ coilovers, whiteline rear strut brace, whiteline front strut brace, 18x8.75 wheels and yokohama parade spec 2 tyres.

So as you can imagine, it really is fantastic now. Such a lovely compliant car daily for dropping my kids to nursery and school yet when pushed it's so predictable it's crazy. I just love the way this thing handles. Way better than my hawk was now. Can get a little arse out action when I want, otherwise poised and controlled. As you say, there is no DCCD so it's like the blob STI non-widetrack on steroids now. :D

That ^ is my to do list for my leggy, (apart from the coilovers as the bilstein suspension is pretty good and fairly new) I just need to work out what is compatible with a mk IV legacy. And then find some cash.
