Uprated oil pumps, who from and what size?!

So going on my oil pressure thread I think I'll be needing one of these soon. It's primarily a track car, engine is supposed to be forged and if I adjust my low idle I reckon I'll still only be seeing 20psi at idle. A little more would be nice.

So far I have seen the RCM pumps, and I've just discovered there are Graham Goode and Cosworth options out there too. Is there anyone else making a good uprated pump?

The RCM ones seem to come in 10mm, 11mm and 12mm. How do you know which to use and what's the purpose of the different sizes?

EDIT: I've just now found a post by David at API saying that AVCS cars would use a 12mm pump. Mine being a Blob STI (widetrack) I believe it has AVCS, correct?

12mm would be too big imo unless your running 2.5 avcs and big power. The 11mm modified valve ones are good enough for the 2.0 with avcs at decent hp level.

A lot think 12mm is best which it's not for most on their application.

All the ones you've seen will be good makes as long as it's the modified valve ones

According to David @ API here:

It would usually have 12mm if AVCS on a 2005 car, that's what I'm going on.

bustaMOVEs 24 March 2017 06:29 PM

Lol he don't even know if newage sti had avcs going by further replys lol.
As said a 12mm pump is normally for 2.5 avcs engines where they require more oil flow, that's all it is, oil to flow more not pressure.
Do you have a external oil cooler? If so then a 12mm may be better but otherwise as said 11mm is bang on.
I have an 11mm pump fitted on a newage 2.0 avcs running circa 450, I wouldn't fit a 12mm unless I was running a extral cooler which I'm not.

Read this, that's just 10 seconds on me searching to show you

I have an 11mm prv mod pump on my forged 2.5 with wrx 2.0 non avcs heads, also run 19row mocum cooler. It's a Paul Finch build so he clearly felt flow would be sufficient.
I wouldn't want to criticise David on that thread but he does appear to be dodging around a bit.

The only time I would fit a 12mm pump, is with a quad avc's engine, running an external oil cooler, & more importantly larger than OE spec bearing clearances, for bearing cooling.

bustaMOVEs 24 March 2017 08:17 PM

Exactly 11mm is more than adequate for big builds on 2.0 avcs even running cooler as trev has.

Jay Cartay 24 March 2017 10:24 PM

It's a strange one because there's a bit of confusion over whether mine's a 2.0 or 2.1. It's certainly only running early 300s now though.

I've seen a Graham Goode 10mm pump going really cheap but I'm worried that 1. I'd be better with an 11mm for competition/track use and I aim to go up past 400bhp in the next year, 2. Oil pump might be fine, it might already be uprated as I was promised and I'd be wasting money. Although I'm sure the GG one would sell on fine.

Just keen to ensure I do this right. Really though, once I start with this I'll be looking at a baffled sump etc. Moroso pickup pipe and so on :lol1:

I find my system if anything is too efficient, the high flow rad stat/ mocom cooler give low oil temps on the road, ok if it's a hot day at the track, it's well suited. I should revert back to a standard rad stat to get more temp into the oil.
My point is oil flow through the cooler is more than enough.

ASperformance built my forged 2.0 with single avcs for 600bhp and used an RCM 11mm oil pump.

RCM pumps are engraved RCM and a four digit number and it's visible beneath the alternator.

Jay Cartay 26 March 2017 12:07 AM

Yeah I'm going to look for that tomorrow.

If it's not and I am buying a replacement, should I go 10 or 11mm for a 400bhp build? It will eventually go higher but that could take two more years so no point worrying too much about that yet.

Ive recently had my 07 Hawk Sti fully forged with Cosworth pistons, rods, gaskets, ACL bearing and RCM extreme head studs & cams etc. After putting all that money and time in seemed daft not to uprate the oil feed, went for a modified 12mm RCM oil pump and a larger pick up pipe. Went the whole hog and put a timing belt, pulleys, water pump and larger alloy Radiator and header tank. As your using it for mainly track days you might want to look at a baffle plate for your sump also.
