Not content with allowing MI5 and company to spy on your e-mails, trace your whereabouts via your mobile phone, and log every web-site that you visit, the government wants to extent these snooping powers to just about everyone in "authority".

It is dodgy, but if it helps the fight against terrorism then I'm not gonna complain (as long as it has the right restrictions i.e. not sold to companies etc.).

I know this isn't strictly relevant, but I am annoyed at being on the electoral register, but due to some guy taking his local authority to Court re: selling the information to third parties, I cannot get flipping credit!

This is very worrying we already know that the Government will smear anybody who publicly opposes them as they admitted over the train crash survivors, but now to give the other government departments and local government these rights is totally unacceptable. The current system already allows to much access. There is more than enough access to combat terroriosm they are just not going to catch terrorists any quicker because the department of transport will now be allowed to track all the memebers of association of British Drivers E-mails, or anybody else they chose. The next time you write to the local paper objecting to more bus lanes or speed humps the local council will now be able to track all your phone calls maybe release a list of the web sites you recently visited in a leak to a friendly journalist like Scoobynet to prove what militant motorist you are etc.
The Security services already have in place systems that track your phone if they want and automaticly scan all E-mails and fax's for key words or phrases. All encryption software available in the western world has to provide the security services with a way of reading it so basicly they already can monitor you as much as they need to for counter terrorism. but they are suppose to ask a Judge for a lot of these existing ways, the new system will allow a senior government person in that council or department to authorise it! As if we trust them when they admit they will smear any body who doesn't agree with them. |

The UK's largest buyer of advertising last year (by a ridiculously huge margin - some £70m!!) was.... the UK Government. Not content with charging us huge taxes, they then have the nerve to use these funds to advertise (ie convert the weaker minded..) how great they are - brainwashing us in to giving them another term! Just as the topic goes thought this might be a worthy contribution, apps such realplayer , download accelerators or similar software logs every download you do. Your IP Adrress, Email adrress, the link you just visited to download etc.. Everything is just archived and stored away and never erased.
email accounts such hotmail do a very similar exercise. Best way to send email would be to use PGP to encrypt the message, failing that use the hushmail.com website to send and receive your emails. This server provides free limited use of the service. Because this server is outside the EEC it does not need to abide by such rules. there was a Panorama program about this only a couple of weeks ago! The government spent something like 30% of it's (obscenely massive) advertising budget in the ONE MONTH prior to the, er, last election. Commercials saying things like "we will pay nurses lots of money" and "we will be tough on crime and the causes of crime". It is not very often that the BBC has a program that openly criticises the government, but this clearly showed the abuse of power and tax-payers money in an attempt to buy votes!!! mb |
