£60-70k on a special car that will hold value

My Dad wants to get a car sometime next year and he isn't in a hurry but he's asked me to help and has a budget of approx £60-70k. He's looked at an Audi R8 but luggage space is a main factor unfortunately.

The criteria is:

- Needs to be special/stand out
- Second hand
- Likely to hold value/appreciate
- Luggage space for 2 small suitcases
- Will also consider some sort of "super classic"

He doesn't have any idea hence the need for help.

Aircooled 911 if you can find any,

Mint 928 gts,

Porsche is where to invest right now but that ship may have already sailed

banny sti 27 June 2016 12:34 PM

Still a few years away yet but the american import rule of 25 years i think stops them rising the now,

Look at old original R32 GTR they are now eligable for entry into states and mint ones are trading at high prices,

I expect the R33 to be the same when it comes of age too

LSherratt 27 June 2016 01:45 PM

Thanks so far, Ferrari 360 looks very nice. Porsche 911 (993) very nice too but pushing the budget to £100k for a nice one, 993 turbo's £150kish :freak3:

I don't think a GTR is his sort of thing but will definitely mention. Keep the suggestions coming.

grahamc 27 June 2016 01:50 PM

Its not 2nd, its not in budget, but the new Nismo GTR has been released and so far the older one has held value rather well.

993 Porsche?

Mercedes SL/Pagoda?

e Type?

McLarens seem to be holding value quite well :)

Ash Webster 27 June 2016 01:56 PM

super classic - NSX or Esprit? :D

Manual Ferrari 355, 50/60k

Try find an R129 SL 600, car came with the same block that's in the zonda, and can be made to sound similar :)
or same shape sl 63 amg rare v8, or rarer sl73 amg v12 (hens teeth.)

Porsche 928 GTS as i says earlier,

Ferrari 456 Manual (scary v12 ferrari running costs tho)

This all day long. :thumb: Buy a decent well looked after 355 and you'll never lose money on it.

Price doesn't seem too bad on them. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/list/31/sl600/

355 was going to be my suggestion.

tarmac terror 27 June 2016 09:45 PM

As has been suggested, a well chosen ferarri is probably the way to go. I had an option on a very low mileage 1976 308GTB which was in good shape. At the time I couldn't find the £20K I needed to buy it. I doubt I will ever be able to afford a tidy example now!!!

Wow thats alot.

I see there sl72 & 73. Both v12 same as zonda.

There was a v8 sl63 i think too. Rare.

hodgy0_2 28 June 2016 08:40 PM

I agree re 355 - stunning car, but quite small

A friend in the village has a 612, he paid that sort of money a few years
ago

Plenty of luggage space too

He reckons (and I believe him) that he has not lost a penny on it

And he deffo rags the beans off it

stilover 29 June 2016 01:33 PM

Classic 911's are holding and increasing in value's too.

Shame about the R8. I had one for just over 3 years and got the money back I paid for it. Outstanding cars. You'd be surprised how much luggage you can get in one. Not suitcases, but squishy bags. Decent space in front and they have a special bag that lays on the shelf behind the seats. You can get loads in it.

Problem with Ferrari's is the maintenance costs required to make sure it holds it's value. Plus they are the most millage sensitive cars on the planet.

They do look fairly nice but having driven one at a Track day I have to say they are rather dull and really not too quick IMO.

TVR Sagaris, might have missed the boat there though.

Tuscans seem to be trading well at the moment too. Certainly rare things and never going to be any more of anything of the ilk of those early 2000's T cars ever again.

Maserati Granturismo Stradale, Find a red one or a nice colour, look after it and you wont lose to much money!!!:luvlove:

And that sound!!

Porsche 996 GT3. Only going to go through the roof long term

LSherratt 01 July 2016 11:13 AM

Thanks guys, lots of suggestions to look at there. But a 22B definitely isn't his thing! He did comment that a 355 Spider looks very nice but it's pushing it at £80k.

Interesting suggestion regarding a V12 Merc SL600. After a bit of research, it seems that a V8 Merc SL60 AMG is probably a better and more exciting car according to various forums and comments.

Only 50ish made in RHD

Porsche 968 Club Sport with factory decals? Surely that's gonna be worth a bomb in say 10 years(?)
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...7c599a5ae.jpeg

Lots of these suggestions has opened doors to other ideas which is great.

JTaylor 01 July 2016 11:43 AM

Ok, so luggage space is an issue, but if I had that sort of money to spank on a car it'd be one of these:

http://m.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C760444

Obviously the Singer 911s are the best cars in the world, but the above fits nicely in budget. I'm sure your old man has similarly impeccable taste. ;)
