New owner and first Subaru, tips please

Hi All,

Just signed up after 8 years modifying Mk4 golfs (still got that one too and a 1971 mini). Just got a 2001 wrx which has daft big exhaust and dump valve. Looking to return it to standard (ish) but it seems difficult to find oem parts (first Japanese car too so be gentle if I am being naive). Any tips on how to source the bits? Cam belt was done at 50000 and its on 96000 now so probably due. Looks OK to diy (30 years messing with cars) but worth waiting or do it now. Has a full history so well looked after and drives really nicely.

Looks like a really useful forum you have here, looking forward to learning.

One thing I've found is that for most user serviceable parts (suspension, drop links, brakes and bushes) upgrade parts are similar in price to decent quality oem and can even be cheaper. Give or take a bit.
Also useful is Matty at MB developments. He can be found on the trader section. He's a breaker and an excellent source of better than average quality used parts.
But these are suprisingly easy to work on. I'd had a break from messing around with cars for quite a few years and was surprised at how much I could do on the driveway with basic tools.

Thanks trooper. Found a replacement for the dump valve. After a standard ish back box next. The one that's in is wider than my foot!

Welcome, Prodrive back box is a good option, reasonably quiet around town and no drone at motorway speeds but does liven up when you give it beans and you can still hear the burble without offending all and sundry, put an add in the wanted section, i'm sure someone will have one tucked away.:thumb:

+1 for the prodrive exhaust. I believe later versions come with a 3rd cat delete (i.e. a straight through center section) so is freer flowing than stock, but still counts as OEM. I think they were made under license by scorpion.
This thread gives a good list of improvements than can be made while still keeping the car stock-ish.
