What does it take to get reliable 500whp?

Hi guys & girls

I know this type of question gets asked often and I have used the search function to take a look at the various options but as with most things, it's just easier to ask the question and look at the answers :thumb:

So, quick background, I'm a Brit living in Canada and I've got an itch I want to scratch, and that itch is to build a nice 22b replica.
I have procured a nice 2.5RS coupe and have had some metal wide arch wings/fenders sent out to me so the car part is sorted.

As for the engine, as the title says, I'd like to have reliable 500whp but the end figure isn't massively important.

I thought as a good start point, an EJ22T engine would be good, so I have just got one of them.
I have been offered a deal on a stroker kit from an engine guy across here who is known to build some good engines.

So, first question, do you think this is a good way to go?
Second, what are the best heads to use in this build?
The question of turbo to use seems to be very subjective. My thought process is I'd like something that spools up reasonably quickly but past that, I need more advice!

I will be looking to start a build thread but thought I would get it started here as I'm guessing there will be various ideas/suggestions :D

I look forward to your thoughts :thumb:

A few initial of the top of head thoughts
1. Build it for 600whp. Then map it for 500whp
2. Closed Deck block
3. The quality of the Machine work is as important as the build
4. Look at it holistically and build a car, not an engine. The Suspension, Braking, Drive train and Engine should all work well together.
5. How will you use it? Track? Road? Drive it hard, carefully ect? and build for that too.

So I would sit down and think about how you will use it and spec out the car as a package not just the engine.

Speak with EngineTuner or Nick at Advanced.

Tidgy 09 March 2016 12:35 PM

500wbhp is uk flywheel so 500bhp is pretty second hat nowadays.

But thats said, what are your plans for it? track car, road car? have you ever driven a 500bhp car before?

JGlanzaV 09 March 2016 07:38 PM

What do you need for a reliable 500hp?

Money.

Lots of it.

my build for you pal

How do you work that out?
So, we're talking 500hp at the wheels, which given the efficiency of Subaru's all wheel drive system, requires roughly, 610-640 at the crank (not exact figures as there are arguments on the efficiency question ;))
So how does that equate to 500hp flywheel figure??

2. Closed Deck block So, got that with the EJ22T block
3. The quality of the Machine work is as important as the build Again, makes sense, hence I'm going to use the guy who has offered me the stroker kit as he has a good reputation over here
4. Look at it holistically and build a car, not an engine. The Suspension, Braking, Drive train and Engine should all work well together.I will be doing this, I just wanted to get going with ideas on the engine
5. How will you use it? Track? Road? Drive it hard, carefully ect? and build for that too.It will be a combination of those things other than driving it carefully! I will bear all that in mind as well ;)

So I would sit down and think about how you will use it and spec out the car as a package not just the engine.

Thanks for your answers, as I put above, this was just to get going on ideas for engine to start with but I take on all your points, thanks once again.

Nice one Ryan, thanks for the link.

Just read the whole lot, start to finish!!

Man, you change your mind a lot :lol1:

Good to see that is similar to what I'm thinking about. Think I might end up 'borrowing' some of your ideas :thumb:

Another quick question to ask, what are the best heads to use on this build?

Give me a shout if you need any help pal. Just remember the little things add up massively. Fuel fittings, braided fuel lines, stuff like that. New clutch and fly wheel has just cost me £900.

its a different rating, US BHP is different to UK BHP :thumb:

No mate, 500wbhp is at the wheels no matter where you are.

Flywheel hp is a calculation from the dyno, Wheel hp is a direct measurement.

So if you're after 500 @ the wheels you're looking at 560+ fly

Tidgy 13 March 2016 07:00 PM

metric and imperial HP are different ;)

Go on then, got any information?

Dazzles Fiesti 14 March 2016 01:36 AM

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower

http://www.kylesconverter.com/power/...ric-horsepower

The second one is a quick calculator that shows the difference but if you type in 500, the metric equivalent is 506.93!

So,not a lot of difference!!

But I'm pretty sure we use the same BHP here as you guys do? :wonder:
I'll endeavour to find out anyway :thumb:

you'd be gutted if you got 500 metric and not imperial ;)

I'm pretty sure I could live with the 6hp difference :thumb:

trevsjwood 14 March 2016 05:42 PM

I've just been over on the NASIOC website, section factory 2.5's, re a thread, 'experiences of a Blouch 440xt on a '12 wrx'.
Contributions come from '09, '11, '14 year wrx's with this turbo.
Figures quoted range from 344 to 365 whp. Metric or Imperial that converts to nearly 440hp at the crank. You wouldn't run that sort of power on standard wrx's here without serious risk of engine damage, so either the US 2.5 is specced a lot better than the UK or we aren't reading from the same sheet.

So, I'm just bringing this up from the dead as I'm actually starting to talk with a friend about building this engine.

Other than the spec from Banny there wasn't much technical information on a good route to go?

My guess would be a lot of guys have built motors since I first asked so would be very interested in specs and results if you don't mind?

Many thanks :thumb:

Probably a bit more than that even . 500@ wheels would be over 600 bhp .

To the OP. Please ignore RaggedRaggy, it's a second account for a well known forum troll Fawor who knows nothing and just comes on here to abuse people. Hopefully all his posts will get deleted again today and this new account too.

As it turns out I didn't get to see it but thanks for letting me know :thumb:
