What Porsche up to around £30k
I'd love one, trouble is I have no idea what one's what, and what they'd be good for/at.
Used as a weekend/fun car with the odd commute. Can anyone give me a quick rundown of what all the numbers mean? :D |
I'd be looking at a nice 997 C2S, however I think the engine got better post 2008 and not sure 30k is at that level yet

The 996 Turbo has to be at the top of the list for this money.

C4 = 4 wheel drive Add a "S" on and its a bit faster. |

I'm seeing a lot of the turbo versions with a tiptronic gearbox, anyone know if these are any good? Cars I've driven in the past with this I haven't been keen at all.

My 996 Turbo had tiptronic and it was much better than you may have been led to believe. For every day driving you can just let the car sort its gears out (and still blow the socks off most other cars on the road) and if you really want to cut loose you can use the tip like a manual. |
I think a couple of test drives are in order, I just hate looking at cars without the means to buy it if I like it. I wont be in a position to buy until December.

I do like the 997 models. Just for the newness look, 996 are a bit dated to me now.
I'd stretch a little and go for a 997 turbo. The tiptronic are a bit slower compared to manual (that's if you care about point something of a second). I was thinking of one of these for my next toy/daily drive and give family car to wife and rid of her runaround. |

Which she's quite pleased about. :D |

The facelift / series-2 cars switched to a 2.9l for the smaller-engined model (2008/9 onwards), and the OP should find plenty of those to pick from in the £25K bracket. Very capable cars, and would probably have one myself if space on the driveway permitted.

2008/9 is not the latest shape. The latest shape is 2013 onwards. I believe the engines available are 2.7 or 3.4, or 3.8 in the GT4.

But in essence to op and his budget, I'd go for a 997 C2S as rear wheel drive is quicker to the 4s as is a manual box.
It's what I'd go for if I had money now. |

Think that's got to be the answer to be honest, you'll be getting a proper weapons grade Porsche for your money that way (and I have a vague recollection that the turbo engine doesn't have the same IMS/RMS issues as the NA versions).
The 996 Turbo engine is an entirely different lump to the N/A versions, originating in a Porsche race car and very strong as a result. I rue the day I sold mine but while it never went wrong the costs of running it were a significant factor! |
