Where is the consistency in Scoobynet's moderators

I'll hold my hands up and say there are many things I don't understand in this world, not because I'm incapable of comprehension but because I choose not to investigate them. However I think I have a good level of general understanding of most everyday things, apart from the manner in which Scoobynet's moderators apply their logic to the control (moderation?) of thread content. Sometimes it's just inconsistent, other times it's just plain irrational.
Take these two threads:
https://www.scoobynet.com/non-scooby...-not-good.html

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...ly-motors.html

The first started off as a general comment on a serious tragedy, but quickly descended into a scoobynet slanging match and contains examples of blatant racism, trolling, and personal insult. Moderator interest - zero.

The second contains details of something of interest to anyone who owns a specialist car, and what may happen in the course of getting it serviced. No great revelations perhaps, but no (serious) insults, racism, or trolling. Moderator interest? At the first squeal of protest from one of the main protagonists the thread is closed, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Anyone have similar thoughts?

You should wear my shoes in Computer Related. Free for all when it comes to insulting me, banned if I retaliate.

Tidgy 17 September 2015 11:05 AM

No one will sue them because of the first one ;)

Firstly, having looked a the first thread you've linked, I have removed it. I agree that there are some unpleasant comments, and as per, descended into pretty pointless argument. I apologise to Jods, as I don't think he intended the thread to go that way, and had I noticed it sooner, I would have just removed comments, rather than the whole thread, sadly, I didn't and at this stage, cleaning it up would leave little left anyway. He is obviously free to start another, but we'd have to stay on our guard re. comments made.

The second thread, given it's title, stands out as one to keep an eye on. I don't know whether any contact has been made with any other mods in private about that thread, perhaps it has, or it's just been a case of erring on the side of caution by locking it at this point, as Ali has given his reasons for. In fairness, if the rules of the forum were followed to the letter, that thread would have gone straight away, being a 'name and shame'. Being that it may be of interest and the fact the company were happy to put their side across, it was left, and again, in fairness, it has only been locked, not vaped, so is still viewable to members, and Ali has clearly stated it can be updated if an update comes along, that the OP wishes to provide.

More generally speaking, the fact is, mods only have a certain amount of free time to dedicate to the forum and as such, simply cannot read through each thread in case inappropriate/unacceptable comments are being made, so we do rely on RTMs quite a bit to point us to them. No doubt that will not go down well with some, but it's the truth. I work full time, and along with other stuff I need to do at home etc. I am only left with a limited amount of time here. I do my best in that time, but I cannot magic more hours in the day, so I apologise if it's seen as not good enough.

When it comes to content (comments), it's not as easy as some may think to know the best course of action to take. Even after all this time doing this, I still struggle to be honest, balancing allowing free speech or giving room for debate, and deciding on when something said is crossing a line. No doubt I'll get shot down for saying that, but I'm just being honest.

I've not even clicked on the mosque thread let alone read anything within it. But it appears Lisa has. And its the reverse with the Shelly thread.

So there's your answer Blue; Two different people dealt with it.

Contrary to popular belief, the attempts at cloning moderators hasn't been successful; My "Mini-me" is sadly too short to reach the keyboard! :lol1:

Lisa and Ali thanks for taking the trouble to reply.
It does seem unfortunate that the thread that history plainly indicates as being the most likely to degenerate into racism and insult, with a clue ('mosque') in the tile I might add, was completely ignored by all the moderators, not just the two who, to their credit, are probably the most vigilant. Whereas the more general one with more forum relevance in its content was promptly moderated as requested.
This is what I meannt by a lack of consistency

ALi-B 17 September 2015 01:47 PM

There's probably a little bit of truth there, where time and inclination has a factor here. If the thread title doen't attract my attention though a normal day on here then its largely ignored. But thats just me, TBH I even glazed over news report of the bombing (was more interested in the Corbyn debates) so I guess I subconciously did the same here.

alcazar 17 September 2015 03:17 PM

Comes down to the perennial, "Does Scoobynet have sufficient moderators?"

At present, I'd say no. I've lost count of the number of threads I've RTM'd recently that ought to have been picked up.

And it's no good saying, "I didn't see it because.........", since there ought to be a mod for each section, whose business it is to see stuff.

Perhaps we do, but sadly, that isn't up to us existing mods.

As for RTMs, I wouldn't personally mention ones we receive in case members wish to remain anonymous, but as you have brought it up, I will, though I will not be mega specific.

Out of recent RTMs, 1 was vaped within half an hour of the RTM being made, 1 had it's title changed and was moved to a different section (again in under half an hour of the RTM), and that resulted in a discussion about 'what's it worth' threads, and if paying members should be allowed to post them. It has resulted in an amendment to the rules, which in short is yes, but only within the sales section, not General etc. The other 2, I admit, I saw them and right or wrong, I didn't see too much of a problem with a new member asking for advice in more than one section. Whilst it may be irritating to some, like I say, I didn't personally think it was a major deal. In fairness though, a different mod obviously shared your opinion and since deleted the duplicates.

So, down to me really, not all of the RTMs were acted upon perhaps in the way/time frame you'd want, but in the end, all your recent ones have been.

That is not to say I don't think more mod time would go amiss.

ditchmyster 17 September 2015 04:08 PM

So you agreed with me about the inappropriate title then. :D

Anyone have similar thoughts?

Yes. I was about to put up a thread in the Policy section about it, but thanks for raising it in this thread. I can put my thoughts here, now.

Wondering about the same thing that the moderation seems to be proactive here where it feels like it, and blatantly overlooks threads like that 'Mosque' one, I sent a candid pm to the administrator of this site on 13th at 1:44 pm; in order to bring his attention to this issue. Despite that, no action was taken whatsoever, and that thread must have hung about as it is, until you posted this one. I did not receive any response to my pm; not even out of any courtesy, and I don't mind, because I didn't ask for it. Action would have been better, but my pm was totally overlooked.

That made me wonder if Neil's doubt on that thread may have some truth in it.

Glad to see that Lisa took notice of this thread of yours, and did something about it, Blu by You.

ALi-B 17 September 2015 06:09 PM

TH seeing the thread wasn't RTM'd I don't really understand how it can be said that it was overlooked? :wonder:

Whilst it may have been reported to someone (Stu? ), and I'm not sure if it was a complaint about the thread, moderation, users, or rules/policies but either way it hasn't been passed onto any moderators and therefore we've never been given the opertunity to have our attention brought to it until this thread cropped up.

I understand the point people make that we should read every thread on here. But for me, I am unable to do that, both through personal time constraint and mental capacity/ability (I can only read so much in one go, less if I'm tired etc).

So to repeat what has been said many times before by the team here is if there is a problem with a particular thread or post, let us know via RTM. Please don't assume moderators on any forum read every thread or post, its simply not fair to expect that IMO.

Al, this place has faced proactive moderation by the moderators without having to RTM the material. I put up a thread in Policy about it a couple of months back.

https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...oderation.html

I appreciate this, but as Blu by You says up there in one of his posts that the thread titled with the word 'Mosque' doesn't get moderators' attention?? Unbelievable. And all that time I saw moderation actively making posts on other NSR threads. I don't buy that "You should have RTM-ed", I'm afraid.

I can C&P that pm here, if you like. The essence of my pm to the admin was that the moderators were taking no notice hence please do something about it. I requested for the removal of the trouble-causing posts on that thread, and I also wished for the repeat and blatant offender to be banned.

In addition, reporting to the admin shouldn't be any different to reporting to the moderator. If anything, it should be taken more seriously. Even on the website that directs you to 'how to deal with racial stuff on line', tells you to report to the web admin as the initial point of formal reporting, so I did just the right thing. Especially, if a thread titled with the 'Mosque' word doesn't catch the attention of the moderators, for it to turn into a dumping ground for racially divisive material. Moderators should be vigilant enough to scan such threads.

I have to say that moderators at least respond to your pm, just out of some courtesy. It's not that I asked for some undue favour or put forward some irrational demand or anything. If it was, then why remove the thread now? Removal of it proves that I was asking for the right thing to be done. I observed nothing different than what Blue by You has observed. I'm glad it's not just me, but the likes of him and Neil can also see that.

Once again, I don't buy this stubborn attitude with " RTM if bothered" when moderation has a time to read and post on other threads. Once again, a thread titled as Grand Mosque- Saudi. Not good not being scanned by any moderator or the admin (even after sending him a pm about it) is appalling. Silence on matters like that can speak thousand words.

By the way, I don't like putting up pms for public knowledge, against my own rules. I did put it up here, because it was just a one-way, non-attended message, then. I have taken it out now, as I have had a response from the Admin.
Now feel free to lock/delete this thread, as it usually happens. Anyone makes a valid point against the action (or the non-action, in this case), lock/delete their expression. But let the irrationals spit out their racial hatred all over, and give a blind eye to it. :)

You do good job, Lisa, but this^ indicates that SN needs more voluntreers with some free time in their hands to moderate this place. More volunteers would mean better scanning.

You also do a good job, Al. But going with what you write^ about your limitations, this place seems to need more volunteer moderators that are not as limited with their time and capacity.

I nominate Jack Clark and dbp. :D

About RTM-ing, yes, trouble causing material can be RTM-ed, but there's the evidence on this thread that RTA did take place, if not RTM. But it wasn't taken any notice of.

Shellyaj 17 September 2015 07:50 PM

I think you will find that the moderators stopped the thread because there was little more to be gained. I was unprepared to devolve and divulge private information and was being consistently and consciosly maligned and misquoted as well as being misrepresented at a large number of turns.

There was simply nothing to be gained from continuing, the outcome has to be legally quashed anyway (HR Laws) so as a constructive board they did what was best for ALL its members and simply "moved on"...

I personally think that it was the right thing to do as regardless of how many times I said "please be patient, these things take time to investigate" people were still being asinine...

It's still ongoing tbh, and will do for some time.

Shellyaj, fair enough about the thread you're talking about > https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...ly-motors.html

All's well if it ends well and all that.

But there's another thread in question here, which has been vaped, now. It was titled as Grand Mosque- Saudi. Not Good

The vaping of that Mosque thread isn't an issue. the issue is for how long it was ignored to deal with, by the mods/admin; despite formally reporting the foul play on it days earlier than its final 'dust-to-dust' fate today. Regarding this one, 'how' it ends is phenomenal.

However......

I ignore most of the threads as they all end up same, so I don't wish to waste my time or get angry by certain posters.
I come home to chill and read the good stuff I like, not a load of drivel and folk being petty acting on who's more clever, smarter, wiser, cockiest, toughest, trolliest and so on.
I'll only click on a thread if it suits me otherwise I'm wasting my evening.
