Hi guys,

My question is possibly a repetition of a previous topic. I nevertheless dare to ask.

I am interested in upgrading my MY99 (no mods so far) with Ecutek's Tek2 device.
Please, are there drivers out there that can provide me with experience with the product (preferably longer-term)?

- Are the advantages obvious? What are the disadvantages?
- Does Tek2 eliminate the stock boost restrictions in 5th gear, respectively does it eliminate the undesired top speed limit, too?
- Power gain also with stock exhaust?
- Would you buy it again?

I map with Ecutek products, so I can give you some factual answers if not unbiased opinions :D

Power advantage depends on what you are starting with - there is more of a difference coming from a MY00 than a MY99. If you had a boost controller before there is less of an advantage again. The rev limit and speed limit remain. The boost limit is raised to 19.6 PSI as the PPP and STi. The top speed limit could be increased sufficiently to avoid triggering it ever, but Subarus are not known for their reliability cruising at very high speeds, so I would recommend against it.

Despite the risk, I would insist on a complete removal of the speed limiter.
However, it is not in my intention to constantly cruise at top speed but to obtain peak speed for a short time if needed. I drive around 5k miles of German Autobahn per year and don't like the situation of outperforming a BMW first but getting overtaken at top speed afterwards.
Does Ecutek actually sell Tek2 devices without the limiter?

Other than the performance increase, is it possible to tell by computer or by other method if the tek 2 is fitted, so to speak? I think what i mean is, if i accidentally forgot to mention it to the insurance company and i wrote my motor off, upon inspection is there any way they could find the upgrade and refuse to pay out? Not that i'd forget of course!!!!!!!

Doubt it... Everything stays the same apart from the look up tables that they use (not excel) dont quote me on that bit, but all they do is reprogram and the select monitor still works so I doubt they would be able to tell...

14/12/98, means your car is a MY99, so the Tek 2 will be right for your car. The MY99s came out in October of that year. But if you like, you can have a look at your ECU and it should have either a black sticker with AE800 writen on it, or a brown sticker with AE801 on it. These two ECUs were on the MY99s. The AE800 on the earlier ones and the AE801 on later ones.

Yes 147mph soft boost cut. If you have read all the big end bearing failure threads I would leave well alone, but if a customer wants it done and understands the risks I will raise it for them.

I think that when I have my "normal" Ecutek Tek2 fitted I have a PPP but whit little bit more power and torque (faster car) and whit the same reability.

I live in Portugal and my car is a work car so I can not have problems whit him but I like if I can have a little more power so I want to ask you and I would to you answer me honest if I install a EcuTek Tek2 in my car if it stays reability. Reability to me is the important.

PS: I have fitted too a SS exhaust (de-cated but probably I will buy a Kat), APS coold air intake system, APS top-monted, samco-sport pipes (all), HKS dump-valve, NGK Group N Spark Pluges and a oil cooler.

I think it would be as reliable as the Prodrive Performance Pack. There is nothing about the map that should compromise reliability - the boost levels are sensible, the fuelling is still rich, and the ignition not too far advanced - in some areas it is less than the Prodrive ECU as it seems a bit excessive.

With any MAF based ECU in any state of tune, probably the main concern is your MAF sensor with your APS induction. Fantastic piece of kit, but it would be worth having an AFR meter to check if you suddenly go lean if the MAF sensor were to fail.

AFR= air fuel ratio
MAP= manifold absolute pressure
MAF= mass air flow
MAF measures the amount of air going in, MAP measures the pressure, AFR gauge attaches to the lambda sensor signal and gives an estimate of AFR in some circumstances.

And sorry but I do not understand????

Just do it, you will not regret it.

Warranty is not an issue since the Subaru select monitor see the
ECU as a standard piece of kit. Big bonus..... unlike after market ECUs.

Wonder why there are so many Links for sale 2nd hand now, there are not selling either. But on comparison Ecutek is soo much more advanced taking advantage of Subarus millions of pounds of development into the Jecs.

I can feel my cheque book twiching. What sort of damage can i expect, financially speaking?
It's just occured to me! My car hit the road on 14/12/1998, but does have all of the factory 99 spec kit fitted. I'm not sure about the engine and ecu though! What would i be looking for to find out if tek 2 is available for me?
