Leaving the Subaru fold-but to what?
To be honest I'm not sure what I want. I've currently got a Hawkeye Spec C Type RA with just over 5000, not a typo, yes, 5000 miles. Now I've had 6 subarus over the last 11 years, 22B, Spec C, RA, WR1 and now I'm looking at something different.
I've toyed with the idea of old skool Ford, Cosworth ESCos, Mk 1 and Mk 2 but just can't see me using it. I'm also thinking C63 AMG (which is where I'm steering towards), R35, but my mate sold his for a new M4 after a few months as he said it's too easy to drive. A Bentley Continental GT did come into my thoughts but then it's monumentally expensive for bits and services. DB9, hmmmm, not sure. I've a budget of about £35k, maybe a bit more for the right car. Help me out! |

I've not driven a DB9 but understand (for the vintage you're looking at) they're a bit more pipe and slippers than a Vantage.
35K will get you a 4.3V8V, trouble is when you start looking into it you'll want a 4.7, preferably manual. |

Bit of background.... I started off in a NA Impreza, soon moved to a 2000 GT (in South Africa), 1996 STi wagon (in the UK) and finally a 2001 bugeye STi (running a little under 400hp). After the last STi, I was ready to give up on modding cars, tested an R8, AM v8 Vantage S, C63 and a couple of others. Yes it is easy to go faster in, but getting the most out of it is an art. As an all-rounder its hard to beat, cruise to track, be fastest round, cruise home. I am just back from 2k miles through Europe (motorways, mountain roads, etc) and it managed perfectly (fits loads of baggage, comfortable, easy). Depending on where in London you are, Im happy to meetup, have a chat, take you out in mine... its currently in for MOT and service (shouldnt be too long). GTROC is at Donnington for Nissan Experience this weekend or ASDA (Charity Day) at Bruntingthorpe in August either would be a good time to go out in a few cars and see what they are capable of. I keep the GTR for weekends and odd track days, so it stays special for me. I also have a disco for daily and a MX5 (being kitted out now) for track use. |
I'm with the Nissan GTR above, it will appreciated in value as well during the time you have it.

Only drove them for a few miles each on a Supercar day but I found that the V8 Vantage felt a world away from the DB9. The 9 felt very much like a mile muncher and although the Vantage is still a heavy lump itself, it felt so much more alive. I'm not sure either car would be my weapon of choice for a weekend toy though. If minimal weekend mileage is likely then I'd be having a close look at Atom's, Exiges and other similar things!

Definately not commute, I work 180 miles from home. Many thanks for the offer, however, I have now moved from London to the West Country. It would just be a weekend car, and maybe the odd track day. The more I am thinking about it a R35 seems to where I am swaying towards. Reading through the first few pages of that thread and for a few grand the power you can extract is unbelievable. Probably quite handy I'm not too far from Litchfields either. If I was doing 1000 miles a year what would be typical running costs? Say an annual service at Litchfields? |

With that sort of mileage, I would be going classic (Z car, hakosuka, old porsche - though budget might be an issue, etc) or something silly like an Atom or a Zenos (went out and tested one of these..... they are a little daft :freak3:). Not sure, I have never actually done just a service......... I think about £2-300 for just the service (if not Nissan). Can definitely get to around 600hp for 2-2.5k, less if you buy a few used parts. Tyres and brakes are the big expense, but if you are reasonable decent with them, they do last quite a while :thumb: |

All depends on you though, if you would prefer something newer and dont mind spending the money, the GTR isnt a bad buy. 2011 car is the sweet spot IMHO, I have a 2010 and spent a bit on changing little things that are all standard on the 2011 car. 2010 & 2011 are doing well with prices, holding very well. In fact, I know of white 2010 car that will be up for sale shortly, 1 owner from new around 30k miles, white, slightly modded, but not silly - only selling due to baby. He wants to tidy up a few things and change the exhaust (currently well over 110DB - very loud).
