Intercooler replacement
Hey guys, need to replace my intercooler on my impreza 2000 1997 model soon but not looking to do front mount conversion or upgrade bhp just looking for another top mount. All i can find is front mounts, any other compatible top mount intercoolers even off newer impreza models?
what year is yours?
1 is standard Version 4 (1997-1998) wrx intercooler. still on the car running. |
Mine is p reg so 97, uk turbo 2000 impreza
I'd buy a Newage Wrx intercooler, thats what i've done, doesn't require much modifing, the newage STI one requires abit more effort, and cost alot more.
Any particular newage wrx model or are they pretty much all the same after a certain year?
I have a 2001 Bugeye WRX one available in a week or two if interested, its in fair condition and won't be too much gold!
pete |
sure. Buy a newage wrx intercooler. Then your dump valve will not fit, and if you out a newage bov or anyhing else you will have idle issues as new bov needs a remap.
Thats exactly what iv been thinking gaborppp that its gonna require more and more things doing just to get it running right with uprated intercooler. Trying to find like for like replacement for now as im not looking to bump up bhp just have a tidier ic
To double check,
see link bellow, your intercooler should look like it, but in black. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/206/4...835edca614.jpg if yes, you need a V3/V4 wrx standard intercooler. should be plenty around on ebay. Don't get fouled by some prices, they should not be more than £30 in my opinion. |
Yep same model in black, cheers for that man much appreciated :)
To fit your orignal dv use a kit like so, v4 and v5 intercoolers are pants might aswell stick to your standard one.

Cheers jay, looking to whip mine out in couple weeks and get new one in then. Trying to keep standard stuff but just renovate and bring it back to its former glory with new piping, new caps etc etc
Not if the idle control valve is in the way, it will need the front bit where the dumpvalve fits welding up, cut the dumpvalve pipe off the old ic and weld it on the passenger side

@Reebok classics I very much doubt this. This is because the hole where this goes, is right in front of the idle control valve.
While V4 Intercooler pipe exist is offset as you can see in the picture. |
I thought as much but cheers for confirming dude :) gonna try a like for like replacement for now and just tidy up the engine before doing any upgrades

I bought an adaptor to fit the STi6 intercooler on my V4.

Found on another thread |
Matthew are you sure your not thinking of the STI intercooler not the WRX one?
As i've never heard anyone else having this problem?

See where your dumpvalve pipe is, if you get a newer ic, where the dumpvalve bolts the cooler it will hit the idle control valve 1000%, if you get a new age ic, you can make a plate to block the the dv fixing point and get your metal pipe coming off your cooler welded on the side

As the other guy said the dv will not fit if there idle control valve is in the way, I didn't realise this at first either... school boy error but cnc'd and adaptor up to fit the newer type bov, you'll see what I mean from the pic
Yea like that pic there stefan put up or weld a nipple on side for dump valve, and with that adapter plate with the nipple it may be tight it may not haven't tried so can say, but I have tried putting a 1999 uk2000 top mount on my v4 sti dumpvalve hits icv
Did you weld the original dv mounting point up or bolt on plat, I'm going to be putting a sti tmic on eventually
Did you buy the same adaptor i bought?

In my case i cnc'd up a blanking plate for the original dump valve flange
Hi all , as I mentioned earlier I have a newage wrx intercooler to go on my v4 , what is the easiest way of making it fit , as mentioned it will hit the idle control valve so do I buy a adaptor , if so where from, and if not do I weld the elbow off the original v4 cooler , or if anyone could tell me the best easiest way to do this , need to get this done before I upgrade injectors and turbo ready for a new map on esl thanks and have a lovely evening
Easiest way buy the adapter you can fit it all yourself, me personally will get mine welded as it's one more place to leak over time, maybe pm stefan see how much he'd want to cnc you one up like his?
