Japspeed Sports Cats - What Power are people making on them?

As per title, what sort of power are people pushing with one of these fitted?
I rang RCM for a quote as I know their sports cats are excellent quality but at £500+ it's a big ask.

With the Japspeed ones retailing at significantly less I was wondering if anyone making over 400bhp is running one and if there are any noticeable downsides.

Thanks. Link to original post below.

I'm after one of these, be interested to see what people say and to see what sort of lifespan they have.

They are chinese made Alibaba specials. I wouldnt touch them on a proper performance car. Pieces of tin.

Ian at Hayward and Scott explained to me how they make them so cheap and its just not worth the bother. Do it once, do it properly.

Facian 04 March 2015 10:32 PM

When i was speaking to JGM late last year, he mentioned he'd had some good results with them, but we were only discussing my power goals (mid-300's) so i don't know if they continue to perform well at higher levels.

i decided against it in the end as i couldn't find many people who had managed to pass a legitimate MOT with a sports cat (in general, not aimed at Japspeed) so it didn't seem worth the outlay to end up still needing a 'friendly' MOT.

Most sports cats are made in China, and you pay a premium for them just because they have a fancy brand name

No they are not! Prodrive, RCM and Milltek sports cat's as an example.

jaygsi 04 March 2015 11:08 PM

I didn't say all were, but a lot are.

Hi there

If budget allows then i would go with RCM,I know they're expensive, but they're proven on numerous cars,I know Steve@Stevesbluewrx from over here has run on his bug at 480bhp without the issue

I've not run sports cat,but if you don't have MOT friendly garage then I would go with Japspeed and swap prior to MOT and after MOT I would swap for full decat, but still you will need to have tweaked map,on yours Alcatek you can have several maps and I would ask mapper if he can do one map for MOT for sport cat

Thanks,Jura

If you a get a 200 cell sports cat it should pass easy, it's the 100 cell that struggle. When I go for mot it fails unless I take it on a long drive before hand.

BrownPantsRacing 05 March 2015 10:21 AM

I'm using a 200cel cobra made right here in the UK. Nice piece of kit and passed MOT at Subaru main dealer for the last 5 years now.

Don't know. It was on the car when I bought it. :thumb:

Although the mot man said last time that because it is not the manufacturers cat, he would have to fail me next time, even though it passed on emissions!

Suffice to say I will be going somewhere else this year.

jaygsi 05 March 2015 11:45 AM

What the chuff, really. Where he get that from.

I'd go else where.

Bit late but thanks everyone for your replies.
Might look at the 200 cell cobra one but its £438 (or £400ish on eBay)

...for that money might as well buy the RCM one but would be interested to know how long they'd last...

Milltek look to be £700+ so sod that; H&S are similarly over £600...

Well I took it somewhere else and it passed easily. No problems at all!

jaygsi 17 March 2015 08:09 AM

Weird that, as long as it passes emissions shouldn't be a problem

I got a TSL 100 cel sports cat about 6 yrs ago from someone on here. The car has passed the emission test each year, but only just and I make sure it's really hot before arriving at the station.

Nick

And there in lies the problem. Pay the proper money for a decent sport cat and not worry about the MOT.

BrownPantsRacing 17 March 2015 04:52 PM

Even my 200 cel cobra sports cat failed the last MOT at Subaru last time until they warmed it up. :(
