Subaru engine advice

Is there anyway to tell if an engine is

open deck,

semi closed deck or

fully closed deck?

And which one would you recommend?

I've also seen some with coil packs and ht leads, does this make much of a difference?

I haven't heard to good things about the engines with ht leads but I'm new to scooby's

cdb will cross hatching on it, but the question is what are your plans?

cdb are stronger, but also more expensive and may be ott for what you want.

Are you looking to buy a car, get an engine built, what are your power goals, what are you gonna use the car for, etc etc etc

It would be as a weekend car for some fun, is like to run 350bhp without forging on a nice safe map but if I fancied forging it then I'd be looking to run 450bhp

Should I look for a version 2 or version 5/6 or is there a different version which would be best suited for me?

a classic with 350 will be rapid, especialy if you picked up an RA or R.

Have you got a purchasing budget in mind?

How much lighter is a type r than just a normal 4door scooby?

I believe R and RA are 1190kg others came in around 1260kg, but seems to vary from year to year.

most hardcore version is a 95 RA

See that's not much difference, in the weights, what engine would you recommended for power gains?

Tidgy 02 February 2015 02:14 PM

70kg in not far off a passenger, so is a reasonable amount. RA/R also have short ratio gearbox.

Decat, panel filter and map initialy and see how you go, list of possible upgrades is long, brakes, suspension, etc etc

The type R's are no lighter than a regular impreza. V3 and V4 'R's' are roughly 1240kg and that increased with the later cars.

If the closed deck is the best for power and is the strongest,

Which versions did they come in?

Hmmm, I understood they were?

They still have all the creature comforts that the RA doesn't come with which makes them light.
Rear wiper, AC, electric windows, electric mirrors etc etc etc.

factory CDB was only ever fitted to the original Legacy single turbo 89-93 or the early Impreza's being discontinued by the time they did v2 cars (small selection of v2 cars had them)........

they do live on though as we machine most options to suit.........
