n00b with a Wagon

I've just bought an N reg Wagon WRX STi, thought I'd sign up to find out a few things.

I'm no stranger to car forums but haven't been on one in a while, I'm sure it's the same useful advice and witty banter. I previously had a Corsa C track car as my pride and joy on Jenvey ITBs and Emerald stand alone management etc... reluctantly let it go in favour of something a little more practical.

I also had a Lancia Delta Integrale for a while so I'm no stranger to rusty old labours of love, lol.

So the Scoob is ridiculously clean for a car of it's age. Reasonably standard with a few minor adjustments. I need to soften up the coilovers a touch as it's a bit of a spine breaker at the minute.

It's been fitted with a Bailey recirc dump valve, what's the general consensus on them? I've heard mixed reviews.

There is a bit os wet in the boot. I was told the worst thing this would be is the tailgate seal, anything else I should look out for?

Nice looking Wagon you have there I have a blue one and loving it never thought I would say that about it.

Dump valve seems to be like swearing on here most people, me included, just stick with the standard recirc valve. I've had no experience with them myself but I think the noisier ones give the cars a more Chav feel.

Fortunately I have no water in the boot but I think the seal would be the best place to start.

Yeah I know dump valves do have chav connotations but I just want whatever is mechanically best for the car.

Yeah the dealer said it's been happy on 97 but best run it on 99 if possible. My local garage is a shell so I'll keep her on a staple diet of Vpower.

I also used to have a red Integrale HF 16v wonderful cars to own eh!

Obviously great taste in cars, lol. Yeah I love the red, the dealer who is a Subaru specialist said he'd never seen one in this colour before :-)

Yes I'd probably agree mine was much the same, although it was a nice example I spent far more time fettling it than driving it! Including an engine change on the drive... Quite tricky given the bulkhead arrangement. Many a skinned knuckle on that car!

The scoobs are much better built with ease of maintenance in mind, mine's proven a joy to work on so far :)

It might be worth you having a read through my recent thread as there was a good discussion on checking the details of the early GF8 STI's as unfortunately the v2 wagons are easily faked. As I found some of the info on the web isn't always as it seems!

Lol, mine died on the way home from collecting it. New engine from John Whalley, that was an utter pig to swap out.

Cool thanks, worth a read. To be fair I don't know enough about them to spot a good fake but I wouldn't be too upset if it dropped my insurance premium, lol. It has the badges and stickers in the engine bay, on the strut brace etc... It's got water spray on the intercooler. That said it comes up on some databases as the sti and others as an LX, thanks I'll have a little look see

It all depends on when it was manufactured, as from my research it seems the MY95 and earlier GF8 STI's shared the same numbers as a WRX, presumably because they were removed from the main production line and finished by STI. The MY96 onwards STI wagon was given it's own designated option code.

The STI wagon was a bit watered down over the saloon as it has 260ps, the same as a WRX saloon at the time and it's not clear whether it had any shiny engine internals. It does have it's own 'SC' code ECU which some say is similar to the Z4 ECU from the WRX saloon, others say not...

Other things to check are: 20mm adjustable rear ARB, 9k rpm rev counter, Nardi wheel and knob, TD05h turbo (the WRX wagon at that time had a TD04), unpainted slanted IC, red-tagged STI badged brakes hoses, STI grey alcantara interior and the other bits you mentioned.

It's a bit of a minefield!

Well I know I have the STi interior, Nardi wheel and unpainted slanted intercooler. I'm confident it is an STi but would still be interesting to verify it for the sake of curiosity. Would probably be useful if and when I come to sell it too.
