JDM & AMG

Seeing as the weather was nice today and we had some time on our hands, Banny and I had a little fun. An SL55 deputising for his Type R. :)

not a big fan of merc's usually but that one looks quite smart... also know nothing about them performance wise... what is this one producing?

Maz 19 October 2014 07:10 PM

I think they're around 500/500 power and torque. Very tail happy even in the dry. Sounded nice but then again the JDM on full chat ran it close for sound :D

huzzy1 19 October 2014 07:13 PM

I'm toying with chopping my 22B in for a C63 AMG but not sure on how long the novelty will last.

Maz 19 October 2014 07:30 PM

They're well engineered motors but I've been weaned on cheap(ish) Jap boxes since young. I'm not sure I could get on with rear drive and auto indefinitely. You are certainly a lot less connected than an Impreza.

Maz 19 October 2014 07:38 PM

Plus the 10 mpg local makes the Scooby seem parsimonious!

JGlanzaV 19 October 2014 08:08 PM

Driven a couple of the 55amgs, apart from looking like a hairdresser they are a real hoot to drive!

Lol!!!

I always made sureto have the roof down, if Im gonna look like that I may as well go for it! The noise with the roof down is something elsetoo.

SAM-UK300 19 October 2014 08:45 PM

Do they only do autospastic?

joe v3sti 19 October 2014 08:51 PM

Cars looking great great there lads

Maz 19 October 2014 09:01 PM

Cheers Joe, thought we'd make the most of the remnants of summer. Gales and monsoon forecast for this coming week. :(

Awesome pair of motors hope you guys had a good time!

SL55s are between 476bhp and 504bhp depending on their vintage with about 550 torque.

They are 5 speed auto with comfort, sport and manual (paddleshift) settings. They use ABC active body control to make the 1.85 tonnes handle well, but they are not really a sportscar, more of a grand tourer

A few tweaks like secondary cat delete, X pipe, Johnson I/C pump, larger heat exchanger, S/C pulley change and a re-map will see you heading towards 575/620 and a bigger throttle body, headers and a new induction system will see over 600/650 very easily. Not much can live with the rolling acceleration once you have that sort of power under your foot :D

The seats are lovely as is the interior but they are not without their failings such as the ABC going awry and leaking rear boot seals causing electrical issues. People say any convertible is a hairdresser's car, but who cares what people think.... if you like a car crack on.

Here's a couple of pics of mine.

Only thing I don't like about that is your choice of wheels, the rest of it looks awesome.

Yeah as you say, from a rolling start these things absolutely fly. I used to think my first Bugeye was just about the quickest car on sale until I drove one of these for myself. It's unfortunately a little redundant for the majority of driving but the top end of these cars is quite astonishing they'll give anything a run for their money.

Maz 20 October 2014 10:22 AM

That's a lovely example Chris. I quite like the stealth bomber look. :D

adam405sti 22 October 2014 02:21 AM

Took this in a few weeks ago. Not a fan of the naturally aspirated engines normally and didn't know what to expect from it putting all the power on the rear wheels. Took it out a few days ago (before the weather turns) and it put a huge :D on my face

That's a beauty Adam. Even though I'm not a huge fan of auto and rear drive, one of them would be very tempting.

kaine19 25 October 2014 02:56 PM

I love the AMG sound. I love the new Mercs all round, there fast becoming the car to have.

Put it this way, would a 16yr old Merc still look as good (not as dated) as a 16yr old 22b?

adam405sti 25 October 2014 07:12 PM

Must say a few friends have been telling me about the unpredictability of the c63 (combination of power/rear wheel drive) but i've not noticed anything un-ruly about them or the 63 being extra twitchy due to the immense power all going on the rear wheels (or maybe i will find out when im in a hedge looking at on-coming traffic) 4wd just just sounds a safer bet. Mind i'm a bit warey of taking it out anyway let alone the wet.

Well they are certainly gaining a certain reputation.
