I want them to die.
:mad:Maple trees that is.
I have nearly cut down all the maples at the end of my garden but they grow back again. They are not mine but they are between the back gardens. No one wants them but no one is prepared to do anything to get rid of them. You cant get to the base of the trees as they are below ground now. Some have been cut down to about 4ft but new branches grow next to where they are cut. It is a never ending saga and its driving me mad  I had them cut down because they took all the light and dropped seeds every where, thousands of them. The seedlings grow in anything and if you miss them you have new trees before you know it. What can i put in a hole in the tree to kill it that is legal? How deep do the holes have to be etc. I have some Sodium Chlorate crystals but dont know if this will work. :wonder: Anyone? :thumb: |
drill big holes and pour tar, creosote whatever you can your hands on :thumb:

you can get jail for killing somone elses trees, be carefull
if you cut round the bark ( must be all the way round) the tree will die if you get the sodim cristals in warm water in a watering can and pour over the tree if its small this will also poison it |

How many and how big? How long do they take to die? |

I read that, but i think it takes a long while for them to die. And i cant find how many nails you need and how deep they have to be. :p

Alternatively cut a ring of bark around the tree and then it can get no water, and will die ;)

Pmsl, i have just rang my local council for advise about the trees and was told that Mr Branch is in later on :lol1:
|
He will be a local Branch then!
Les :D |
Maybe he's Special Branch and you're going to get nicked? ;)
|
or he is branching out in a new direction!
|
:lol1:, i just twigged :D
Mr Branch has just told me that i have to write to the Estates Department basically for permission to do anything. He said the trees belong to the council. I told him that the council should then be responsible for keeping them tidy and not a nuisance to other people. I thought i would try to be clever. :p Anyway, he said he can see something on the ordinance survey map and knows the trees i am talking about. What can i say when i write in? It could turn out that they qualify for removal if they are a nuisance. |
Make sure the call is logged ;)
Chip |
Oh no you phoned the council! Now that they know about them they'll stick a preservation order on them!
|
looks like i was barking up the wrong tree calling the council. :p

I should take a leaf out of his book. He'll soon get to the root of the problem.:) |
copper nails do not work, drilling into the wood will help the wood to rot but does not kill it.
Copious amounts of salt (kitchen salt/rock salt/grit) well watered in will work but be aware nothing will grow there for quite a while Otherwise something like SBK from a garden centre works, use it neat not watered down. Kev (Tree Surgeon!!) |

That stuff will kill everything including pets be carefull

Sodium Chlorate is now banned, if the use of it was traced back to you (e.g. via a poorly animal and vet) you could be in trouble. However yes it will work, but make it up quite concentrated.

Banned? I only got it last year from Wilkinsons. :wonder:
If it works then it is good enough for me. I will put a plastic bag over the bits i have treated. No dogs can get to where the trees are, just foxes and cats :thumb: |

Great, so i can go mad with this stuff for one more month :thumb:

If they belong to the council Sara you might have to be careful in case you get done by them for damaging them. Councils can be quite unpleasant about things like that.
