Right, dug it out of the attic and I have no idea which mix! Where do I look for that?

It still has the £1.99 HMV sticker on the front :)

belliott69 17 January 2013 08:01 PM

First single I got myself was Lou Bega, Mambo no5 and the first album was Offspring, Americana.

That was the first one, starts with the air raid siren, good mix :thumb:

The other two 12" singles were "Carnage" and "Hibakusha", IMO Carnage is the best.

Yes I am sad :lol1:

First album on vinyl - Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge over Troubled Water.

Other albums on vinyl (because CDs didn't exist at the time) would include Lindisfarne, Steely Dan and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Then when CDs became available the first one was Bop Till You Drop by Ry Cooder. (Previously available on vinyl but - and I'm sure someone will correct me if this is wrong - the first album to be digitally recorded).

Sir, I like your style

corradoboy 19 January 2013 02:04 AM

Queen - Live Killers and Greatest Hits, both on tape. We were on holiday in Northamptonshire and were killing a rainy day wandering around the brand new Queensgate shopping mall in Peterborough. I remember ogling the Nakamichi Dragon tape deck in Laskey's and promising myself I'd have one one day. Thank God I never wasted 1.5k on a tape deck

Frosticles 19 January 2013 03:58 PM

First Single was "Johnny Won't get to Heaven" by The Killjoys. (Kevin Rowland who went on to Dexy's fame)

First LP was The Damned - "Machine Gun Etiquette"

If you listen to 'Never Mind The Boll0cks' they were pretty tight as a band*. Not as bad as they wanted to be, probably.

*excluding Sid Vicious.

Sid Vicious only played on one track, Bodies I think.

The rest of the guitar work was done by Steve Jones who could play pretty well.

The album is still awesome in my opinon not for its quality so much as its historical significance....an album recorded in about 4 days on a shoestring budget by a handful of people with no real musical pedigree at a time when prog rock bands would be in the studios for months. It made you feel anyone could do it.... and that was partly what punk was all about!

All these choices are too cool to be real I think. My first was this but in my defence I was 7 or 8.

second was an album with this on it.

Vicious was a figurehead for the band, and that was it. Every excuse was made to avoid him playing on any recordings. Lets be fair, the punks at the gigs would not really appreciate his bassmanship (or complete lack of it). They did, however, enjoy him spitting on them, @rsing about on stage and all of the other stupid stuff he did.
Matlock was given the flick to be replaced by Vicious, because he liked the Beatles. Its a good story, untrue but good!
I'll argue with anyone that the Sex Pistols were tighter than they were given credit for.

I think we're in agreement aren't we?

It was only Vicious who was utterly hopeless. The rest of them were pretty good. In fact PIL were one of my many favourite bands in the early 80s

Yeah, we are totally in agreement! I have disagreed with a number of friends (mostly heavy metal fans) who think they were a joke band, like the Monkees with less talent. I like the Monkees as well, btw!

I am always on the lookout for a cheap example of this ->

not going to happen anytime soon.

First 7" single: Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division (re-issue, I believe)
First 12" single: Nowhere Girl - B-Movie

Myles' post has reminded me that I have 'This Not a Love Song' somewhere.

I have that - original copy bought in HMV as it happens. It's in good condition too. Is it worth something as never really thought about it before?

Yes it is. Not earth shatteringly valuable but one to keep all the same.

I cooled my jets buying it last night by buying Stevie Wonders 'Music Of My Mind' on SHM-CD instead.

BurgerKing 26 January 2013 12:27 PM

Only just just spotted this thread. Another one for Bon Jovi, Slippery when wet.

Bought it on CD in 1987 from a small independent record shop called Vibes in Bury, long since gone unfortunately. Ripped it to the iPhone last year to build up my sad middle aged rock collection (Def Leppard, Whitesnake etc.).
