What etch primer did you use as I did not spot a make/brand when speed reading.

I assume is covered the front face existing paint OK and didn't lift or peel it.
I have just been googling as going to so something similar but some etch primers say they can lift existing paint.

I'll look what brand it is later, it was one of the local motorist discount, loads cheaper than Halfords.

the main thing was to key the original alloy well, then spray with the Etch primer.. a couple of coats. I've not had the original paint lift.

Don't buy cheap brand spray rattle cans, the HOLTS I used were great, they spray nice and even and don't splodge blobs out. if you know what i mean.


The only issues I have with the way I did my wheels.. now on the car two months.. stone chips flying off the road chip them slightly, also if the wheel fitter caught the corners of the nuts when he fitted. Apart from that they are holding up well.

Interesting you say that as I painted my OE Hawk Sti wheels anthracite with rattle cans and they do the same, and that was with regular primer.

I was hoping etch primer was the solution, but maybe not.
Are they chipping down to the original paint of just as far as the etch primer.

I have just bought these cheap and want to do the same. Pro podwer coat would be the best option, but that defeats the object of getting them cheap.

Was going to use a mates compressor this time, so maybe I can add a dash of plasticisor or something.

Fitted to check clearances of Brembo's etc...hence the masking tape......

its only small chips that go down to the original, but it might be a fact that it didn't tae to that ara, might not have key'd it enough.

the Etch primer brand was AutoTek Profesional - Etch primer spray paint
Clear Lacquer - Hycote sraypaint..
wheel paint - HOLTS Dupli-Colour auto spray


yours looks better in the anthricite colour.


if you get the wheel specialst to powder coat it'll be about £240 with tyre refit.


In some ways I wish I'd have had them powder coated, but couldn't justify the £250+ to getthem done green. Keeping the cost down, I did it cheaper, least i can do them orange next year. lol

Cheers mate, I will give them a good key with scotchbrite, etched and get some paint mixed up for a compressor I am borrowing.

120grade wet'n'dry.. used wet!! might be the best, get a good key then letthe etch primer do its work. It all smooths out when you get a few coats of primer and finish on the surface.

What are the new wheels called? they look spot on.

phil im using this as my step by step guide to spray somealloys for a cheap run around im going to attempt to spray gloss white , i will post before and after pics if thats ok with you will be attempting it in the next week or two depending on work and weather

I'm just waiting for the cans to arrive, I'll be cleaning down/sanding last years green, then re spray with WHITE primer this time.

If I were you I wouldn't go white ;).... too much keeping clean over the winter.

do you "wet sand" between any primer or top coats ?

I will do,

some of the green is chipped and flacking where I over jet washed them.. with the wrong lance nozzle end :doh:

so will give a good rub down and 'key'
will prime with white primer.. then the neon blue.. a few coats.. then a couple of coats of clear lacquer.

There only my alloys for winter so not too worried, I got the alloys + tyres.... all NEW for under £340 off ebay this time last year. So will change colour every year ;)

looks a good colour ,thats the thing with a white car you can have whatever colour wheels you fancy,im looking for some very cheap wheels to do white for mine .

me like alot :D i considered doing my winter wheels same as yours yellow! but i have not got the b*lls :( so im going grey haha
