Cheers Mate ;) How's yours doing ? you get the Scoop on OK :wonder:

It didn't fit mate. Need to dremel off about an inch on the front of the hole and then fix it with a mixture of screws and ty's magic black sticky stuff I think. I'll get it done when I'm feeling brave ;)

I'm sorry it is giving you a bit of a headache - hope you get it sorted soon, will look great on ;)

An Update ..............................

Thanks to Rich Edwards and Rich D for your efforts today :notworthy

Here's the scoreboard:

Compression test done.

Cyl 1 - 120 psi
Cyl 2 - 120 psi
Cyl 3 - 0  yes ZERO.
Cyl 4 - 70.

Previous sniff test was negative, with no readings - but understand that these can be inconclusive. :wonder::eek:

No other symptoms re: HG failure.

Decisions, decisions :cry::cry: :eek::eek::eek:

R1CH D 23 July 2011 06:09 PM

Glad Rich had a look today si, at least you know it more than likely isnt the head gaskets. Heads off next to see whats going in on in there????

Cannon Fodder 23 July 2011 08:51 PM

Sorry Simon that your engine is FUBAR'd but tbh I could have told you it was beyond help, as you said to me that the engine was rattling like loose bolts in a sweet tin.

Like I said it's a question of whether your engine block can be repaired or whether you need to source another crankcase.

R1CH D 23 July 2011 08:59 PM

It wasnt rattling like the bottom end is buggered IMHO. I got more of a metallic noise coming from mine than si's engine.

Rally fan 555 23 July 2011 10:11 PM

Needed to get the Comp test done as a process sort of thing - I know it was / is making a very strange sound and is very unbalanced as you can imagine - but it's strangley nice to know what you are facing up against.

Valves maybe ????????????

DYL 4N 23 July 2011 10:39 PM

Honestly when the heads come off there ain't going to be a piston left in cyl 3. When I explained what I heard to a couple of reputable subaru engine builders they said the same thing.

Valve or a valve seal is what Rich diagnosed on mine when I had low compression on cylinder 4 Si. But then I don't have any knocking or the engine sounding like a bag of old spanners I'm afraid :(

They end up in pieces and in the sump. Pretty much like your old engine but with out the hole in the block.

The banging is the rod flapping about, which pretty much rights off the block. Shame really as it was a closed deck one too.

Yep, still going strong six months after diagnosis and that's with daily use as well. Overfuelling naturally and the the only time I can feel the misfire is sometimes on cold idle and between 50 and 70mph in 5th. That engine is as strong as an ox and over a 160k on the clock :)
Having said all that, it probably go bang tomorrow ;)

Well worth dropping the oil then, if only to confirm the inevitable :(

Rally fan 555 24 July 2011 10:11 AM

Yeah think I may aswell Deano - see what pops out  As Dylan said Mahhoosive shame on the CDB front

DYL 4N 24 July 2011 10:22 AM

Indeed. See what's lurking within.

Rally fan 555 24 July 2011 10:44 AM

Will have a go later if the Mrs hasn't got her "Car Face" on :lol1:

The Sheep Worrier 24 July 2011 01:54 PM

Gutted for you Si, friggin' nightmare by the sounds of it,

Hopefully you wont loose your patience or confidence in it and choose the right path that suits you.

Good luck with her,
Rob

Rally fan 555 24 July 2011 02:28 PM

Thanks Rob Mate - Hope to see it running again some time ;)

R1CH D 24 July 2011 02:46 PM

Who you going to have look at it si? Forgot to ask yesterday.

Rally fan 555 24 July 2011 03:34 PM

I've dropped the oil now.....filtered it all through a fine filter and also the same treatment for the oil filter and contents itself.

No Water/Debris in the oil at all.............looks quite good actually and would be happy with it an oil change = not even black, but a dark golden colour - it's not that long been changed.

Sooo WTF is going on :wonder:

Not sure of my next move Rich Mate :wonder:

Rally fan 555 24 July 2011 03:39 PM

P.S. Dyl - my old sump was fitted with a Magnetic Plug, but this ones not - is the magnetic one rolling around around there Mate ?

R1CH D 24 July 2011 04:10 PM

no residue in oil from a bust piston then?

Rally fan 555 24 July 2011 04:30 PM

Nah Mate - looks like you could re - use it !!

DYL 4N 24 July 2011 04:38 PM

Hmmm???

Not sure then. Needs to be stripped to answer this one.

As for the sump plug it was full of debris and I didn't want to risk putting it back into a new engine. Would you??

Rally fan 555 24 July 2011 04:47 PM

Strange one eh ? Was just wondering if it was with you, as expected to see it earlier on, when I took the plug out - thought it may have attracted some gunk etc......if it looked ****ty for the build then no worries Mate. ;)

DYL 4N 24 July 2011 04:50 PM

I would like It very much if rich redwards were to strip it.

I can see already I have linch mob after me and by having rich strip it, he would be neutral and then I can't cover up any **** ups.(which by the way I am confident there won't be any)

Rally fan 555 24 July 2011 05:11 PM

No lynch mob at all - I'm just posting what I'm finding - sorry you feel like that Dylan, as I've always valued your input over the last year or so.

I know as much as you, about what's up with her at the moment. I've not pointed a single finger at anyone and wouldn't, as I'm not like that.

Also there has been no mention of any cover ups, or infrance to any future ones ? I'm sure you would be in the same boat if you were Me.

;)

We are all concerned when our pride and joy goes South - and are all Mates at the end of the day.

R1CH D 24 July 2011 05:50 PM

I'd like to echo simons words.

might be the piston ring land has cracked or something to do with piston rings maybe ? only way is to strip it down and then you will get your answers on the problem and fingers crossed somethings can be saved

why would you not put a magnetic sump plug back in as you only need to wipe and clean it im sure you could have got all the debris off :wonder:
