Mapped with an exhaust leak is bad enough. To then think that they had the bloody thing stripped, all they needed to do was plonk two new gaskets and there wouldn't have been this problem!! I'll have to pay for simons tweak. :(
Unless i let them remap it for free, then pop down to Surrey RR and have him cast his magic fingers over it to make sure all is well? Don't even want to drive the car back there. The place is in Norwich and i'm in London. (they came highly recommended by a friend of mine so i decided to give them the job) Wonder if they would go though the trouble of recovering the car?? |

It does seem a little laggy, but that does depend on the way it was run on the dyno, but I wouldn't expect Clive to run it in such a way that would adversely present the results.
Are you looking at the correct gasket? You mention "two new gaskets" but they would only need to disturb the gaskets at the top and bottom of the up-pipe, so one right under the turbo and one between the headers and the up-pipe. Are these the gaskets that are leaking? If it's one of the cross-pipe gaskets then they would not have been disturbed during the fitting of the up-pipe and turbo. Have you spoken to Clive about your concerns since the initial lag discussion? |
Don't think they'll refund it.
I work in a BMW garage, and i know legally, any defective work that is found from a company point of view, can be remedied. However you only get one shot at doing this (generally no charge to the customer) So i'll let them sort it. Not going to use the pipe they rovvided so ill get a refund for that, then I'm going to order harvey's ported up pipe, send it to them, and let them fit it all, map it. I'll then pick it up and get straight to Simon. Just need to get the car to them as i have too much stuff on my plate. Got to go ask her mum for her hand tommorrow!!!!!!! |

The weird thing is, that Clive said the car was laggy when he rang me to say he completed mapping it (rang on the wednesday, flew out to Vegas on thursday, i came friday o collect the car) I was told by Dan the up pipe would chuff for a bit untill it sealed, thought you couldn't really map untill the pipe was sealed otherwise you would be mapping with an issue with lag. Just have so much on my plate that i don't know if i can drop it off. Maybe they'll recover it. I'll have to see what Dan says. Thanks for the resopnce Zen :) |
Before you wade in with your size 9s you should probably be aware that:
They may well have used one of Harvery's up-pipes, they are after all slipjointed and pretty much as you describe, and the are quite popular among Subaru tuners nationwide. They have no obligation to refund the cost of the up-pipe they supplied, it hasn't been proved that it's defective in any way. Having them map it is a waste of time, as Simon will have to start from scratch, and will not be able to download the current map from the ECU. The problem may indeed be with the turbo, so all this work may be for nothing and you'll get to SRR and have equally poor results with no comeback at all from Clive. It seems that you haven't even discussed this with them , but instead got yourself in a pickle whilst being egged on by a people that haven't even seen your car, let alone driven it or inspected it. Just read your response. If both the up-pipe gaskets are leaking then you'll be stuff, so getting them to sort that will most likely solve the issue. But do check the type of up-pipe before buying another or whatever. I don't know how to fix the Vegas thing! |

I'm a mechanic and know you get better results being polite/helpful than shouting like i dropped my favourite dummy. I'll be stuff?? confused. :Suspiciou How will i be able to tell if it's one of harveys?? He normally ports them no? When i saw the pipe before i left the car there, it was just a standard looking up pipe, no heat wrapping or porting marks inside it. :brickwall Oh and Clive in Vegas would be interesting, such a straight talking bloke in the world's 24hour madhouse city! Might end in him either loving it, or burning it's location out of his atlas. |
Right, checked the car this morning when it was cold, the gaskets above and below the up pipe, AND the up pipe itself (@the slip joint) are leaking.
Will give them a buzz and see whats what. |

Spoke to Dan in Clives absence, he said that he has had previous issues where the up pipe ends wern't milled flat enough so he's going to put another pipe on for me. To which i said would it be ok if i put my own one on? (from harvey) and he said yeah it's fine. :luxhello: I'm assuming the map will need tweaking after? |
yes it would need remapping to suit the non-leaking uppipe

Right, thought i'd update everyone.
Got back from holiday and went up to Clive to see how he got on with my car. He was very helpfull and promptly informed me...... The up pipe was bowed that the bottom edge (connecting to the manifold) causing a hot spot on the gasket, and the gasket subsequently meting at that point! Anywhoooo, Clive mentioned it was a TSL uppipe and he has milled it flat, and installed new gaskets free of charge. He then mentioned the vf35 wasn't the healthiest. It has wastegate chatter, an exhaust leak from the hot side that looks like the housing itself!!!! It still has very poor spool, even with a tweak to the map. It still pulls like hell once it's off and going. So it seems the car had six of one fault and half a dozen of another fault!!! The uppipe is cured, but i now realistically need a new turbo. The question is which one to go with my set up?? Do i go td05 16g? If i do, which one?!!!! http://www.shop.indigo-gt.co.uk/prod...7dbbb6245c2605 this one?? or harveys??? glad you have got almost there, as for the turbo a friend had a vf35 that under performed, he ended up going for a front entry tdo5-16g and it went well with that on, after he got bored with that he went for a tdo5-20g and that was v v-quick, the choice is yours dependent on your budget and what you think you will be happy with.
