Funny how most of the spoiler-less cars are yanks where roads are straight etc.
Time for some facts. Make you own mind up whether you feel you need to have downforce for grip. I have and would not remove it for the world (even on the public road) http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...idownforce.jpg iirc the two speeds at which these were judged were 100kph and 150 kph. |
I can only speak from experience; on track they make a considerable difference to stability. There is also a marked difference between a mid level spoiler - an STi4, for instance- and an STi5.
Whilst it is noticeable on the straights, long fast corners are where it really shows; Island at Oulton can be taken 10-15mph faster with an STi6 wing than a mid level as the car feels much more settled. On the road I'd suggest they're of negligible value. |

Casting my mind back a way a seem to recall a guy from Prodrive on about the rear spoiler on the Blobeye, neither the STi or WRX spoiler generated actual downforce, but both acted as lift arresters, helping cut down on the lift the car generates. There was not much difference between either spoiler, the WRX one creating less drag but haveing roughly the same effect on reducing lift.

Quite simply...... if YOU think that spoilers are a marketing ploy for a Scoob, then you should clearly trade your scoob in for a push bike! :D
Does the Scoob need a carlos fandango spoiler, to which you could do your ironing on it, for pure road use? Perhaps not..... but they do and can make a difference. You wouldnt catch me taking mine off, as I know very well what would happen at speed when I lift off....... but then my car is not exactly standard. :D The benefits would be down to the car, use and the driver, as regards to how much a difference would be seen. |

I was at Castle Combe and Snettedon recently and did a few laps without my GT wing, it certainly made a difference under braking and taking the fast corners at the above circuits!
For example, the car felt very light and unstable at high speed through the bend on the main straight at castle combe! |
I have taken the small wrx spoiler off mine and i think it looks nice cause its different compared with most.
Since taking it off, it has affected the handling but only at high speeds. |

The TT is a bit of a different case, but the principal is the same. I assume that because the Impreza is a saloon with a boot hanging out of the back, it is somewhat different than the end of a turd shape that is as slippery as an eel. :D

still unsure then as to what the effect would be? dont like the sti spoiler and prefer the wrx one but rather fancy loosing them all together, however, not at the cost of handling and grip NO WAY...i aim to have my sti running @350bhp sitting on adjustables,droplink, bump steer etc..will it really make the difference?
