How did they stop the diesel freezing :wonder:

Downloading it now as I missed half of it, there will be a HD torrent out there as well :thumb:

messiah 26 July 2007 11:14 AM

They had some sort of additive in with it, Clarkson mentioned it but I've no idea what it was.

I wondered that too - I know that a lot of polar based vehicles never get turned off, as if they did, they would'nt restart.....they have tank heaters that keep the fuel warm.

There were a few omissions - I too thought it odd that Hammond did'nt make it......

I thought the best quote of the prog was from Hammond:-

Q Can you put this harness on the dog
A Theres only two of us here and I have a shovel, don't ask me again!

LOL

NotoriousREV 26 July 2007 12:26 PM

They mixed the diesel with AvGas (aviation fuel)

Leslie 26 July 2007 12:51 PM

Yes thats what they said-Avgas.

I thought it was a good programme and enjoyed it to the end. I have done one or two survival courses in my time of course and their struggles brought it all back. Certainly demonstrated the dangers and difficulties experienced in places like that. When we were doing long low flying exercises in the extreme north of Canada in the winter it was a thought that was always close to us should we have a disastrous failure.

I thought they all did really well.

Yes I was a bit puzzled about that. Maybe the holes were caused by flying debris. Don't expect that much shooting down of aeroplanes around that part of the world!

perhaps it was another case of the beeb showing footage out of sequence - clarkson did it with his polar bear repellant...

James May with his G&T and Fortnum's hamper :lol1:

Hope the TV crew didn't leave 3 Hi-Luxes at the Pole. They will be re-discovered in 20 years' time by the first expedition to reach there in Smart cars, and the bastids will still start first time.

That was really good -- makes me miss Top Gear. I hope they are going to come back in the Autumn.

Old Wings - Isachsen C-47 Crash

The wreck of 43-16062 was briefly shown in an episode of the BBC programme "Top Gear", aired on 25 July 2007. Other footage from this episode indicated that the filming was done in March 2007 or later. Obviously the wreck was still present at Isachsen at that time. An email sent to the BBC has not (yet) revealed a more exact date.

I don't think I understand why they wanted Clarkson to roll around in the snow after he had gone into the cold water. Was it to try and soak up the cold water that was in his clothes?

I thought the best thing to do was take off the wet clothes and put on fresh dry ones. If you don't have those then you have to run around a fire trying to dry out the wet ones you are in. If that's not true, then good old Hollywood has been lying to me again :lol1:

Luminous 27 July 2007 11:37 AM

Oh, and I just downloaded the 350Mb version from Final Gear, its good stuff, no need for a large download. Not to mention that my PC is not capable of playing 1080p, its just too old to cope.

STi-Frenchie 27 July 2007 02:26 PM

The repeat is on Sunday night at 8pm on BBC2 for those that missed it first time around.

Kieran_Burns 27 July 2007 02:57 PM

We've just got a new Samsung 40" LCD and this was one of the first programs we've watched in Hi-Def - utterly utterly amazing. The scenery was incredible and the camera shots REALLY well done.

Excellent program - highly entertaining, but as said above: why not show Hammond getting to the Pole?

Oh, and someone please explain their Sat Nav location to me?

I didn't see the programme, but I gather that they went to the North Magnetic Pole, which is currently in Canada (it is moving all the time).

That's not quite the same thing as going to the real North Pole, that's where Santa lives.

gawd dang it!! You mean I have to do the whole thing all over again? :lol1: :lol1:

Anyway, what is the difference between the real north pole, and magnetic north pole? 20 miles tops?

itworldwide 27 July 2007 03:32 PM

More like 800+ IIRC

messiah 27 July 2007 03:38 PM

Avgas? Doubt it would do anything for a diesel engine apart from bugger it up. Jet-A1 would be more likely.
