Ah - my specialist subject!

Having been plagued a few years ago with aforementioned 'deafness in both ears' and dripped various oily / smelly substances in both ears (and then suitably plugged them with tissue, etc.) all to no avail.... I ended up going to the docs, who referred me to the nurse for a 'syringing'.

The nurse then stuck me in a chair with a kidney bowl on my shoulder and proceeded to grab the piece of equipment shown below, fill with pretty warm water (with a good squirt of fairy liquid) and pressurise it with a good few pumps.

Then - with me sat in the chair, the spraying commenced. Very similar to the 10ml syringe, but much more effective / powerful / long lasting (3 litres divided into 10ml goes quite a few times!).

Gunky horrible stuff just flew out... over a period of 30s or so of constant spraying, interrupted only by the noise of nursey pumping the sprayer!

End result - fantastic. Crystal clear....

So good infact, that I'm now the proud owner of the exact same model shown here....and using it, normally stood in the shower whenever necessary, is simplicity itself!

I tried those ear candles prior to removing a King edward with the syringe....not worth a sausage.

I assume you've already solved this problem by now but if not I can whole heartedly suggest you DO NOT try my method!!!!!

I have had all the gooey stuff dripped into my ears in the past and been totally deaf for a week at a time as well.

I admit they had been softened with olive oil for a couple of days before I got to that stage but it honestly did work very well :lol1:

Considering the genital injuries that can be achieved with a Dyson (albeit through the original tubing rather than reduced bore vac hose from a boost gauge), I would be a bit worried about seeing tympanic membrane and ossicles in the Dyson. I suppose it might be a slightly less embarrassing talking point at your dinner parties, although you wouldn't hear the taunts of your dinner guests through that ear.

yes had same problem.couldnt be arsed waiting for a doctors appointment so got a syringe and when i was in the bath kept blasting my ear .wife nearly threw up when black gunk flew out.thought i was the only daft c--t on this forum but obviously not he! he!

So far we've had dynamite, flame throwers, chinese candles and a DIY Dyson suggestion along with some scintilating observations from Dr Banks. All most helpful :rolleyes:

The Mrs is due back at Docs next week for another go and has been trying some new stuff I got from chemist. I am very reluctant to try too much home flushing as eardrums are rather precious. Fingers crossed. d

I've suffered ear wax build-up over the years and can tell you forget *all* the chemist solutions, otex, audiclear and ear candles they are all a complete waste of time. Last few times I've had mine done at the GPs its been a small electric syringe that 'pulses' the water in rather than one big whoosh and that seems to do the trick. The basic advice is use olive oil warmed slightly for a few days then go to your GP.

My other half is off to the Quacks tomorrow to have his lug flushed out. He's tried everything under the sun and is still deaf as a post. So fingers crossed for him tomorrow :)

Bringing the thread quite neatly back to my original post....... We've done that (3 times) and that hasn't worked, so far.

But there may be more state-of-the-art vacuum jobbies which we willl ask about.

All joking aside David, the best thing to do once the problem is solved is to flush the ear canals regularly.

By that I mean running the shower into the ear and filling it up or submerging them under the water in the bath. That way the build up doesn't happen and it can pass without becoming an obstruction.

I AM DELIGHTED TO REPORT that at the 4th visit today the earth moved. Or at least the offending ear was cleared. A different nurse who turned the boost up a bit I think and it was done. Thanks for (most of) the comments. :cool:

OK, OK, no need to shout!

Been 3 times with the water injection,after month of bloody Olive oil.
Nothing . And there's 5 week waiting on nhs for microsuction. So going private.

Is it really painless? Nurse said wax was held in with skin :eek:

I get this on a regular basis now, usually after been on holiday jumping in and out the pool, diving off boats etc.
last few times just popped to the nurse and had the water syringe/pump thing. Always works a treat, amazed at the crap that comes out but boy the clarity of hearing afterwards is amazing.
Downside : I now cant use the excuse that I couldnt hear my wife telling me off or asking me to do stuff around the house :Suspiciou

Also one time, I had left it so long that I had an ear infection from probing and pushing cooton wool buds down there. So when nurse did the ear wash it bloody hurt like buggery and in fact shortly afterwards I passed out :)

They left me lying on the floor for a while as I was so out of it :lol1:

I've had the warm water pulse thingy a couple of times now, due again when I get my backside into gear to go. Left ear is always the worst for some reason
