You know Rabid, some of your points are actually pretty good, its just a pity you need to be such a prick about it.

I wonder if your as much of a hero in person as you are in front of a keyboard.

When one is dealing with pricks it seems good form to respond in kind.

Of course my point of view is valid, it comes from actual real life experience unlike many people who post here. I've tried 18" rims on a MKIV chassis over many thousands of miles and they were far inferior to 17's, did you do this before commenting?

As for being 'a hero in person', let's just say I'm not afraid to speak my mind whatever the circumstances.

Those wheels all look like cheap reproductions (usually heavy) .... so my 2p would be to pick the lightest wheels as these won't ruin the ride by over- burdening the dampers. :)

Old Style RS4's all the way, just suit the Mk4. Not over the top but more OEM style.

As regards handling, yes it gets worse - mainly due to the weight of the wheel. So lower it with quality springs (eibach, H&R etc) and fit new shocks like billies etc.

The problems are highlighted when going over speed bumps and ridges at low speeds, all other road surfaces the car feels and reacts as normal.

I really like the BBS anniversery alloys ;)
18" RC's i think

Not too hot on alloys, I'm afraid. A chav driving a Golf has what apears to be almost solid silver disc alloys. What are these ones?

Superhero in person. Just an average hero at the keyboard.

Just found a couple of pics of my old Golf

with 18" RS4 reps (old style) - harsh ride

with 17" genuine S3 alloys - better ride

I've just swapped from my 18" replica RS4 wheels for 17" Audi TT wheels.

The ride is much smoother, the acceleration is more noticeable and more nimble around town!

It's also made the car look more descrete, which I like! :)

talizman 21 October 2006 12:03 AM

Any pics Andy?

Andy Tang 21 October 2006 07:08 AM

I'll get some today when it's a little lighter :)

I can live with the more discrete looking car in favour of handling, ride quality and acceleration! ;)

I've got Audi S3 alloys on my 1.8T and really like 'em. I was looking at 18"s for ages and then spied a set of S3 rims not far from me on FleaBay so snapped them up.

Didnt you swap them for a lap top ;)

Look much better mate !!!!

talizman 22 October 2006 11:58 PM

I'm not so keen on the look of them, but if they improve ride and acceleration then I'm all for them! :thumb:

What back box you got Andy and does it free any horses? Hows it sound too?

Glad you've been able to confirm what I said to be the case. 18" wheels on a MKIV chassis ruin the drive. For posers only, even then you have to wonder what they imagine 'pose' is in driving a MKIV.

The wheels are a little plain, but if you wanted something with a little more 'glamour' there are the S3 wheels, the TT Competition wheels, the 17" version of the RS4 wheel, the 5 spoke 17" VW wheel or the 17" split rim version of the GTI/TDI 150 wheel.

I went for these as no money had to change hands, which is always a bonus! ;)

The backbox was already fitted when I bought the car and the previous owner believes it to be a Powerflow  Not sure how much power it gives (if any) and who actually wants the diesel clatter to be louder! ;) Seriously, it's more clattery at start up, but adds a lovely note when accelerating. Not that noticeable when the car is idling and warmed up.

I've got a set of 4 mint S3 wheels if anyone is looking for some.
Bought them for track wheels, but had them refurbished and now cant bring myself to use them for the track.
(daren't put them on the wifes GTi as she'll just kerb them)

Pics, price, tyres, location? ;)

Matt Classic 24 October 2006 01:25 PM

Pics - None as yet as they are still wrapped in the bubble wrap they came back from the refinishers in in the loft of my garage

Tyres - Nope, they were shot so I git rid of those

Location - Norfolk

Price - They owe me £250, but like I say, they are as new. (with centre caps too, although they are marked slightly)

If you're still interested, let me know, I'll take them down from the loft, unwrap them and take some pics and get them to you.
