Since they re-invented it and got rid of that fat bloke in place of May :)

Pratting about and supercars. That's why I like it. If I wanted to have opinons on normal stuff I'd go to a local dealer for a test drive and make my own ;)

BedHog 16 July 2006 11:23 PM

Scripted, staged or whatever. It's still a great hour of entertainment - isn't that what most people watch TV for?

I don't think it's supposed to be serious anymore and i think it's better for it :luxhello:

nik52wrx 16 July 2006 11:24 PM

Ok. If its true comedy your after watch a comedy show.
If you are tired of JC and crew "trying to be funny" dont watch Top Gear", watch Fifth Gear instead. The current format of Top Gear has been running long enough for us all to know how it works, you like or you dont, simple as that.
If you dont like you can join the Fifth gear fan club and rave on about how fit Vicky B.H. is ? :norty:

But why is it funny to set a caravan alight, if you planned to set the caravan alight?

Comedy is best performed by comedians not Jeremy Clarkson!

As I said before, I'm a big fan of TG, but tonights show was just too scripted.

Fifth Gear is a very pale imitation of TG.

I just wish they'd review a few more cars and tone down the 'just for laughs' elements a bit

jimmy boo 17 July 2006 12:07 AM

I watch and enjoy both Top Gear and Fifth Gear.
As soon as they said about the caravan feature I smelled a set up but we know what to expect now so lets just enjoy it for what it is.
The dunt into the bollard was not scripted and May did appear to getting seriously pissed off at times.........loved the Deliverance tune at the pub and the "run away hide in a bush" bit:lol1:
The whole fire thing was a complete set up but hey,who cares......it beats fecking big brother:Whatever_

bugeyeandy 17 July 2006 12:08 AM

Tonights episode was utter carp - get back to the epic races across Europe in a supercar.

Highlight of Top Gear for me is still the Veyron feature - awesome!!

StudentScooby 17 July 2006 12:16 AM

Plenty of lol'in

Gear Head 17 July 2006 08:05 AM

Ofcourse it was bl*ody staged! What show isn't?
Still very entertaining though.

wilb 17 July 2006 08:47 AM

Quality episode!
If you don't like it, don't watch it!

danwrx1980 17 July 2006 09:12 AM

As far as I'm concerned this is the best TG I've seen for a while, the only other one that made me laugh quite as much was the amphibious car feature, with hamster's canal boat camper van.

Its a brilliant show and the only thing that saves the BBC from oblivion IMHO.

Dan:)

RMA26 17 July 2006 09:15 AM

Damn, missed this - was in the pub!

*Sonic* 17 July 2006 09:29 AM

Have to agree with others, my missus & I found it hilarious, almost crying with laughter

Yes it was scripted and setup, but it was so funny, as soon as clarkson said caravan holiday, I said he would end up torching it or suchlike

again like others have said almost all shows are scripted, Ive seen Bottom Live several times and all the cockups/goofs etc are staged and scripted but they still make everyone howl with laughter

Interviews with film/tv stars are generally staged and setup before in the main, some refuse to do them without scripting first to make it funny & watchable

I like top gear because they mess about like they do and provide an hour of entertainment :)

for me they do at least, and last nights episode was worth the 6 week wait cos of the stupid football :D

kingofturds 17 July 2006 09:56 AM

Amazing how, despite the caravan being burnt to a crisp the 2 butane gas bottles in the front did not explode;)

Journeyman 17 July 2006 10:52 AM

..and when the copper turns up whilst their trying to turn the caravan around in on the main road he fails to spot the fact that the towbar and caravan are completely unroadworthy to the point of dangerous? Hmm, most coppers I've met would not have missed that...

Dark Blue Mark 17 July 2006 11:39 AM

Do you not have to watch it first to decide if it was bollox? I normally really enjoy it - but this lost the plot.

Aye, i was laughing out loud, (which seems to happen every week), when they sat in the caravan and it tilted back :lol1:. Although the staged parts soon stopped the laughter, bit OTT this week. Still funny though.

The boats in the lake, now that was p!sh yourself funny! :)

Had bad was the Vectra?!?!?! :freak3:

SirFozzalot 17 July 2006 12:12 PM

Loved it, good entertainment for a Sunday evening! :luxhello:

I am normally a big fan though - jus tthink its lost the plot with that episode.

And the F1 thing smacked of running out of ideas.

compare it to vroom vroom - T.G is years ahead!

The thought had crossed my mind aswell!
I can't believe they got away with towing the caravan with a towbar in that sorry state!

All good fun though.

All you Top Gear haters........... lighten up!

95blackWRX 17 July 2006 01:02 PM

New_scooby_04 17 July 2006 01:28 PM

At the end of the day, it's entertainment.......and they do it a lot better than the rest!!

Is that a dig at me? I don't get the quote. People on here were saying they think it's crap, if so then why watch it each week? That was my point.

mickywrx 17 July 2006 03:33 PM

I thought it was funny as f.uck. :D

starkie2.5wrxsti 17 July 2006 03:58 PM

best program on tv, clarkson is hilarious:D

logiclee 17 July 2006 03:58 PM

There is a thread over in NSR as well, but as I know people involved at the camp site I'll post here as well.

So to fill everyone in.

The bbc crew stopped at a well known Camping and Caravanning Club site.

They were helped to pitch correctly by the site wardens, talked to loads of people, had a laugh and thanked everyone on their departure. They filmed loads of people but only showed the dotty old couple.

They then, in a staged field at a later date, set up James May reversing into an awning (Which was attached to a old scrap Sprite caravan) and then the fire (Again burn't down the old scrap caravan). The fire crew was already in attendance before the fire started and the gas bottles removed. They cut into the film people watching but that was people watching them pull on the site and setting up for real. All club sites have full fire fighting facilities and fire points as well as a 6 metre space rule between units.

The Kia has 173lbft of torque and had no problem maintaining speed limits with a 1200kg van on in the Tow Car of the year awards so seems strange why James could only get 30mph with a 900kg van on the back.
An outfit that can't keep up with traffic or maintain speed is braking the law. The Kia was also driven while in a dangerous condition due to the severe damage to it's tow ball.

Entertainment of sort but a bit two faced from Clarkson and crew.

Cheers
Lee

Any death of a caravan is something to be enjoyed. Buy a tent or rent a holiday cottage, don't get a caravan, you'll be mistaken for a pikey or a chav :D

I think this thread has been taken a little serious....

At no point did any of us disagree with the fact that some of it was staged... i think the point of this thread was to discuss how funny it was (staged or not).

I dont know about you guys, but when i watch TV/Films/Cinema etc... i watch it for the content and appriciate that 90% of it is probably staged, its still funny though to watch.

Top Gear is a TV show designed to Entertain, after watching i felt more Entertained with this particular show than some of the others they have done. Good work BBC, 1 hour slot well spent. :)
