dave.

But Evo's are:D:D:D

flash hood at the ready....

But how many of these cars are as quick as a scoob out of the box and for a similar price? Even the WRX with 220bhp and 4wd and a 0-60 in about 5.7secs goes for £20k. That's not to mention the PPP deal that dealers were offering on the WRX and STi a while back. Value for money.......not many could beat the scoob!

Are you hinting at something or do you always make your eyes look like Patrick Moore and make like you have one big ear?

JTaylor 08 May 2006 11:39 AM

I had a little run with a well driven Clio 172 across part of Dartmoor the other day. We parted company at a t-junction where he gave me a big grin and a thumbs up - I went red and wanted to disappear :o.

It'd be interesting to know how many of these street racers have done any trackdays. There's simply no way you can drive a performance car at 10/10ths on public roads unless you're psycotic, stupid or both. The closest I come to really stretching the RAs legs is early mornings up on the moors and even then I'm conscious of sheep, dung on the road and pot holes. For me, a few committed sessions at a circuit and all this public road stuff becomes insignificant.

Incidentally, if somebody "fended off" me in anything other than actual competition, I'd have real words with them in the pits. To do this on public roads is gheyness itself .

And do you really believe you! or your average driver would get anywhere near those figures? I've had a "out of the box" wrx and oh! it was soooooooooo slow!!! In fact it was positively pedestrian.

No I don't think I could get near those figures but that is irrelevant. My issue is the value for money offered by the WRX (or the STi for that matter). Let's assume that you really have an Evo VIII, bog standard in this country you are looking at what.......270bhp costing £25-26k. Whereas an equivalent WRX even with PPP (ie 260bhp) costs £21.5k. Who's the sucker now? And mine doesn't sound like a manic sewing machine or look like a a badly done Halfrauds project!

As for the WRX being "positively pedestrian are you sure you've driven one (other than on your Xplayboxstation)?

If we're talking out of the box, a £20K WRX is no quicker (its infact slower) on our roads than a £14K Clio 182, £16K LCR, £16K CTR, £18K Focus ST, Astra VXR, shall I go on... the WRX is ****e slow compared to all the hot hatches.... are you sure YOU have driven a WRX.....???

Before you say, well add the PPP, add a remap on all the Turbo cars listed above, then compare.

Let's say this IS my JDM Evo Viii. The full fat 300bhp, not on Xbox, not on Ps2, but sat on my drive. This out of the "box Evo" would rip up an "out of the box" wrx or sti for arse paper my lad. BTW isn't it time for school yet?

It wasn't until I took my Octavia round Knockhill that I found out what it is capable of :D:D No way on earth I'd try driving that way on the road :eek:

Dave,

Don't know the price of the JDM Evo VIII but the full fat 300bhp Evo in this country is still way more expensive than its STi counterpart inc. PPP. I'm guessing the same costs differences would apply to JDM's?

As for relative performanceI'm happy to leave that to experts. When you find one let me know?

Nigel

Take your point, although once you start getting upto £18K you are pretty much talking the same money for a scoob. I was arguing against the point that the the WRX was "positively pedestrian".

I would add that simply remapping a car doesn't automatically mean the car goes faster on the road there are the limitations brought about by two wheel drive! Just as a point of order, you can't really compare simple remaps with PPP as the PPP includes other work - but perhaps you didn't read that in the Beano or Dandy!

Finally, in answer to your point - yes I do own a WRX, and I don't recall too many aforementioned cars disappearing off into the distance on nice A & B roads.

Happy driving!

Sorry, exhaust and intercooler pipe to add to the ECU (and still a WRX can't compete with a (just) remapped car from above).... there's a road test in next weeks Viz.

Do newsagents allow 12 year olds to buy Viz now????

Abdabz 10 May 2006 03:19 PM

Last year I got my Scoobynet stickers for my MY02 WRX with go faster backbox and turbo gauge :thumb:.

Since then nothing has out accelerated me

Scoobynet stickers - better than any PPP IMO :notworthy

AAAh! Are you getting upset? You come on this chatroom slag off scoobs, get a bit of ragging and then go off on a sulk - now I know you must be another Evo driver!!!!

stilover 11 May 2006 10:28 AM

Have to say, I love the Escort Cossie. If they built them brand new now, I'd have one. Obviously power brought up to modern standard ie. 300bhp. The car has a lot of presence on the road. Last year I followed a group of Escort Cossie's that had just been to an RS day at Croft, and they are Soo good looking. Obviously these were all mint versions.
If a very low milage concourse car came up for sale (Standard power) I would be very tempted. Lack of a Garage would be the only reason not to buy it.

As for being unreliable that's rubbish! If they are set up correctly then they are fine, just like any other turbo car.The cossie 'YB' bottom end is one of the strongest around, unlike the Scoobies.

Al,

My mate had a Escort Cossie, nothing but admiration for your car. Yes his was reliible but he spent the best past of 25k upgrading all the components properly (Ford tuning specialist)+ suspension and brake mods.

My brother in law works at Ford, and the reliability figures for the Escort and Focus RS and ST make frightening reading. Japanese cars out of the box are signifigantly more reliable - the facts don't lie (if in doubt look at the AA and RAC fand JD Power figures for the above mentioned cars.

I'm sure you car is reliable and you have fixed all the inherent weakness.

Not at all, I can slag Scoobies off all day long (its far too easy with Impreza's, and the mentality of *some* of their drivers - like you it would seem) but I didn't want to carry on, as it would have gone way off topic. No, I am not an EVO driver, but I feel bad now, as I have degraded them by mentioning them on this forum !!!
