when i use to do rallying to get past the noise test i would push a length of pipe inside the exhaust with some wire welded across one end packed with some steel wool and fixed in place with a screw past test then remove it (and hope it didn't get tested again in the rally) it might work if every thing else is ok - ie just the noise there moaning about |
Could it be the car was tested a cheap MOT testing station??
Your know...the ones saying "MOT's for £25" or similar rather the usual RRP price. These types of places work on a very limited profit margin, or even at a loss and purely rely on failures to make their money, as the average Joe would pay to fix the problem whilst the car is at the garage. The result is that they are very picky and over-zelous when it comes to MOT inspections. I'm not saying that a garage charging RRP would do the same - especially if it's solely an MOT station and nothing else. Or it could be it really is too loud :D |

Set it a few dB above the level required for EU type approval and almost every aftermarket system will still fail. There's a reason why the standard one is so quiet and restrictive. I think it's a remarkable example of common sense being applied. The tester is actually allowed some discretion as to whether he thinks the car is 'too loud' or not. That means that a car which is a bit on the noisy side can still pass; put in a requirement that the exhaust actually be tested and they'll all fail. I personally find overly loud exhausts to be childish and pointlessly antagonistic; the motorist gets a hard enough time from the government as it is without having scores of people whingeing about those 'noisy modified cars' and insisting that 'something must be done'. I don't think any of us would want to see a rule banning cars from being modified at all - but that already is the case in some countries and it's not at all unfeasible that it could happen here too one day. Does that mean an MOT tester could fail my PPP'd STI because it's louder than standard ?! I don't think a requirement would mean ALL would fail - would it? Surely this discretion opens up the MOT tester for even more criticism? |
all i can think is they man doenst like you or ur car the place i take mine loves the sound of it and its a blitz,personaly i dont think its that loud when its just sat ticking over u dont need to shout to talk but then if the garage u had taken it to was a closed in work shop then i would of thought it might echo abit

i dont think they will ever bring a test in really, that would mean every car would have to be tested on a meter and to be honest how long would it take to get round the test?

There's nothing worn about the noise from an exhaust though. It's either loud or it isn't. The noise from an exhaust can be measured accurately and quickly.
I agree that wheel bearings or corrosion should be down to the testers knowledge and experience, but even then their training would detail what guidelines to follow. Don't agree that the logic follows every test in the MOT. Stefan |
