I know. Now I'm quoting without looking it up, but my understanding is that if the new moon occurs before local sunset, then the start of Ramadan is the next day. But if it occurs after sunset, then the start of Ramadan is the day after (i.e. now + 2 days). So there's obviously some dividing line, because the new moon is pretty much the same all over the world (allowing for parallax errors -- can you tell I did astrophysics at university?) whereas the local sunset is different according to longitude.

So you could get two places where at one of them new moon is a minute before sunset, and at the other it's a minute after. These places would only have to be around 100 miles apart, and in one Ramadan would start the day after the other. I think they get around this by declaring it to start on a particular day in a particular country, but it's still not perfect, particularly in countries that aren't islands.

moses 14 October 2004 11:38 PM

Oooh here we go! :D

New thread for this one probably, but it is my view that a creationist can never be a true scientist because their objectivity is marred by things they must accept rather than prove for themselves.

moses 14 October 2004 11:46 PM

I think you are capable of working that one out for yourself

angrynorth 15 October 2004 10:03 AM

A question on that site you linked to Moses reminded me of a genuine religious question once asked by Bill Hicks. By the way, this question is for people of all religions not just Moses...

Not trying to hijack the thread.

If life on earth began with Gods creation of man. Where did Dinosaurs come from?

Reminds me of an article in "the Onion" just after the 911 attacks, the headline was
"God angrily clarifies "Don't Kill" rule." :D

The story was written as an interview with God and he was saying..

" I don't know where people get this idea that its OK to kill people in my name. I never said that, take a look for yourself!"..

Really funny read if you can dig it out. :D

Ted Maul 15 October 2004 01:46 PM

happy ramadan Moses.

ps - remember the yom kippur war....

john banks 15 October 2004 02:06 PM

Moses, I think you should give up turbo boost for Ramadhan. It would be good for your soul :)

john banks 15 October 2004 02:11 PM

If you want to lend me your engine and turbo to get it away from temptation that is fine, I shall be your most willing assistant ;)

Leslie 15 October 2004 02:34 PM

What a strange question to ask on this thread PSL, would have been more tactful to start another thread for that I reckon.

Best wishes to you Moses, I'm sure you will be stronger in all ways when it is finished.

Les :)

Brit_in_Japan 15 October 2004 03:25 PM

Well ramadan started today in Japan. I've been asking a friend here what the rules are. Maybe you can confirm this for me moses...

...in addition to not giving in to temptation for food and drink, you also have to not give in to temptation of the urmmm physical kind? How do I put this delicately, nightime nookie only?

Drunken Bungle Whore 15 October 2004 03:37 PM

....which brings me to my greatest foot in mouth incident - possibly of all time.

I have a very genuine interest in finding out about all differnt types of religion and religious customs. Several years ago I found myself chatting to a Muslim about Ramadan and asking them all about it. They explain that because it's based around a lunar cycle it actually moves 4 days forward each year.

"So" I ask them "When does Ramadan start this year?"
"December 23rd" they answer
"Wow" I exclaim "That's a bit of a bugger for Christmas eh?"

Luckily they thought it was really funny - needless to say I was mortified! :)

Happy Ramadan one and all! :)

and ted maul cheers and yom kippur war i remember it but i wont say nothing in anger in this thread :)

and angrynorth, im not a scholar but as long as i remember the world was here before our father adam, yes so dinosaurs are cool. it says in the quran the universe or galaxy or something was one, i havent memorized the whole verse and God teared or tored them assunder, basically the big bang was in the quran long long time ago

and their is a verse in the quran that God offered the responsiblities of the earth to the elements and mountains etc etc and they refused coz surely they cannot look after them as God can, but the man ( human being) did and God says the man overestimated himself or over estimates himself and they took it on, basically u see what the man done to the earth :D

J4CKO 16 October 2004 08:53 PM

Moses, enjoy the Festival !

I was reading about it the other day, is it me or are there agreat many get out clauses for the fasting bit, I couldnt do it so I am not having a go but it was saying that if you eat (by mistake) then Allah meant you to eat, bit confused but then again non of your Anglo Saxon adopted Pagan type things include fasting, mainly eating, Watching Only Fools and Horses, more eating and burning stuff.

J4CKO 16 October 2004 08:56 PM

Oh and is it at the end of Ramadam(Eid) that all the car rental companies get a bit cagey about renting cars to Asian Guys ?

I think Scoobynet should honour this festival in some way, us standard white anglo saxon agnostic/atheist IT bods get lights at Christmas !

moses 16 October 2004 09:00 PM

lol jacko haha cheers mate :D

no no u cant eat, but if u eat by mistake , u are forgiven coz it wasnt your intention but u continue to fast

and jacko car rental guys do, im not surprised, see the gangs hire them out and trash them, sick lil sh1ts they are, its supposed to be a holy day and some asian lads go and mess around and party, they know nothing about islam , u should see blackpool on eid day, see im from scotland i had a culture shock, english asian lads are totally screwed :D day and nights difference between us scots and u english lot :D

and angrynorth

here have a look

J4CKO 16 October 2004 09:14 PM

I am dying to go to Rusholme at Eid, look like a real party !

How do they get that crazy with no alcohol ?

J4CKO 16 October 2004 09:19 PM

Oops, just eaten, Chicken Chilli Massala, purely by accident you understand !

Also, it said Muslims must refrain from any kind of sexual activity during daylight hours, does that mean its party time at night ?

Is it a coincidence that Ramadam (fasting and no shagging) occurs at the end of British Summer time when the days are getting shorter.....

Aaquil 16 October 2004 09:19 PM

Unfortunately in some cases it is with alcohol and worse what happens there is nothing to do with Islaam just Pakistanis, Bengalis etc. getting out of hand and making the Muslims as a whole look stupid!!!

moses 16 October 2004 09:23 PM

true bros

and jack u taking the mick :D

no party time and its make luv time with the wife wish is pure :D and yes we have fasts in summertime like i said previously, when i was a kid it was in summer time

i went to rushholme twice again what a shock aint seen so many asians in my life except in pakistan and also the amount of takeaways and restaurants, man, how do they survive :) alot of competition
