Let's look at some the facts. In order to earn money from record sales you need to shift a *lot* of units. Much more than you could in the UK market alone. British Idols are rightly unknown or ignored in ALL other territories, because they are crap.

The other way to make money from record sales is to get royalties based on rights to the music and the lyrics. Again, WY niether composes music OR writes the lyrics of the songs he sings. Therefore he is not making anything like what you imagine. Also everything Will Young owns, fancy clothes etc and all his other expenses (flights, cars, hotels etc) have to be paid for out of his earnings (not to mention his managers, stylists, accountants lawyers etc etc..) These will fall as the result of only coming 5th in the competition because product endorsment deals and the like will not get renewed. Even less money for Will. All the hangers on and assorted leeches will still need to be paid though.

Finally, what he is earning today will have to support him most likely for the rest of his life, after his 5 minute career ends. Who will remember Will Young in ten years?

Based on this he ain't doing that well financially at all.
