fatman what bhp do you hope for ??? isshhhhh

David_Wallis 10 November 2003 01:03 AM

The fact that AndyF has 11.7s at c.118mph on his TD05 underlines its potential even though his car is light?
Hmm

9psi boost.. 3rd run ever.. 1st day driving after 18 months and

I get circa 13.5s at 115... hmm.. roll on 2 -3 bar boost :D

David

Fatman 10 November 2003 07:36 AM

jukebox: about 330bhp.

john banks 10 November 2003 12:29 PM

Come on then David, roll it on :D

Andy.F 10 November 2003 02:30 PM

Yea David, whats the delay ? Show us what it can do :D At this rate of progress from the south JB will be the first one to take the 1/4 mile title
(which is 11.6 @ 128mph in case you forgot ;))

David_Wallis 10 November 2003 02:40 PM

Andy.. Its been going well for the past month.. :)

David

David_Wallis 10 November 2003 02:42 PM

incidently what did you think to my 13.5ish sec run at 115ish ?

David

Andy.F 10 November 2003 03:14 PM

Sh1te ;)

I'm not sure what I expected, Pavlo had said that even at that low boost it was pulling better than Robs car had been with 400+bhp so I guess I thought it may have done low 12's at 120ish. I didn't expect Stevens wagon to be faster.

I know you were bouncing off the rev limiter etc and that can lose a lot of time, I know it certainly was not representative of what the car/engine/box combo is capable of at higher boost.
That's why I'm at the hurry up for you to get it running 'proper' :)

Andy

john banks 10 November 2003 06:32 PM

My car is up and running sweetly in Englandshire as we speak :D

vulnax999 11 November 2003 01:35 AM

JB

Shouldn't you be in it while it runs sweetly in englandshire..... !;)

Pavlo 11 November 2003 09:03 AM

Andy,

What we didn't know at the time, was the MSD still had a 6000rpm rev limit on David's car, so yes, it pulled very well, but then it was time to change gear just as it got going.

Paul

Andy.F 11 November 2003 11:02 AM

So you hadn't mapped it above 6000rpm but were prepared to race it over 6k on the dragstrip ? Thats very brave !!

P20SPD 11 November 2003 11:23 AM

Andy, i think what they are saying is, they had mapped it over 6000rpm, think the problem was 5000rpm IIRC, but then for whatever reason, did not set the limiter of the MSD, back to being at the same level of the ecu, or something like that.

Ecu was wanting to go beyond 5000 but the msd didnt.

Steven:confused:

Pavlo 11 November 2003 11:31 AM

Whatever you say Andy.

I drove thoughout the mapping and running in period, eye on AFR whilst on full throttle, as best I could. AFR fine up to rev limit, BANG, change gear.

With the weekend as it was, it never occured to me that I wasn't hitting the 7500 limiter of the Autronic, because the Tacho wasn't working. I can only assume pat didn't notice waht with no sleep, watching the AFR and the map zone, and listening on the det cans.

It wasn't mapped over 6000rpm, because the engine never went over 6000rpm, nor was it going to. The rev limit was only discovered after TOTB when David started to track down the cause of a synch error.

You have some nerve calling other people brave when it comes to mapping.

Paul

David_Wallis 11 November 2003 12:47 PM

Couple of facts that are wrong here...

I had sync and ref errors.. occasionally but thought fook it all run it.. as your damned if you do, your damned if you dont..

(i think this was down to msd at 5.5k saying right no spark.. ecu saying fuel fuel fuel to 6krpm.. I then change gear light this then bang blow wastegate open..) dont think ecu liked it.. could have been bad.. but wasnt.. (its got a few limiter options has the sm2)

I was still banned prior to totb.. so couldnt / Wouldnt drive it..
so it was paul and pat and plenty of redbull..

It was a rush to get there as you know..
I kind of lost heart with the car after totb.. due to the fire..

So it was quite hard to see the laptop and afr and egt and intake, water, oil pressure etc...

I had never driven the car (execpt in the car park)...

so all I could do was either hit the limiter (quickly) or try and guess when to change up.. I got this about right on the 3rd run but not perfectly..

Thats why I was messing about once through the quarter and down the straight and through the car park..

anyway we had another go with the new ecu for scoobyshootout..

I reinstalled the msd prior to Pat mapping it and noticed that the limiter on the dip switches was set for 5500rpm.. the ecu limit was set to 6000 rpm.. the only rev counter we had as on the ecu..

Second attempt at mapping with new ecu in controlling the MSD as should be resulted in an odd missfire.. timing light shows the timing to be jumping.. We spaced cam and crank position sensors and this improved it slightly but not much.. so we then decided that it was probably down to a snap on timing light and the msd.. 1deg offset on the light and it was fine..

I may change to hall effect (optical) pickups when I fit the vernier cam pulleys..

However changing the coil and a couple of other tweaks seems to have sorted it..

It can now go to having another map with a bit more boost.. also should be able to run closed loop with the wideband now.. once I sort the LD01 or test with two laptops in the car..

Regards

David

Andy.F 11 November 2003 01:36 PM

Thanks guys :) What boost are you running now David ?

Paul said "it pulled very well, but then it was time to change gear just as it got going."
Was this a reference to late spool up ? Does it spool up to full boost early enough in the lower gears ?

Do you intend to run at santa pod soon ?
I'm genuinely interested to see how these bigger turbos perform on the long scooby manifold under 'real life' conditions as opposed to a fixed speed dyno result.

Any RR outings planned ? G Force seem to have a good set up there which has a really quick run up time similar to a 3rd/4th gear pull on the road, this should give a realistic power curve.

Andy

Pavlo 11 November 2003 01:59 PM

What I mean andy, is that it pulled very well, but when it did pull you ran out of gear almost instantly. The off boost performance was okay (considering the CR) but it felt good in the 2500-3500rpm level, which didn't have much boost, but enough to make up for the low compression (compared to NA engine) nature.

It may have been the impression of the 6 speed box, but if it had been able to rev through to 7500 it would have been much better, as you would have been right in the power band again when into the next gear.

As it was, the limiter did seem to come in too early, but there was so little time to do anything about it, let alone investigate it properly. We had seen some synch/ref errors when it hit the high rpm, so suspected it might have beeb that, causing the ECU to cut the spark.

Paul

Fangoria 11 November 2003 02:34 PM

Has anyone seem Mr Wallis's car lately or has it been secretly taken away to the local scrappers :p;)...... come on - has anyone?

Andy.F 11 November 2003 02:42 PM

Steve > you bad man, you'll never get into the 22b lounge with talk like that ;)

I see what you mean now Paul, the more power you have the shorter the gearing appears to be as you are forever changing up !
David - Is the proposed 7500rpm a self imposed limit or dictated by any particular component ?

Andy

Andy,

I would suspect its due to the 4000ft/min rule of thumb of piston speed with relation to the increased stroke.

Next time I am on the dyno I am going to see what is happening to the power at 8k rpm. If it is still climbing then I may be forced to consider it just for the dyno, but since revs kill calls (and torque I suspect too) I am not that keen to push it up there. I suspect the other long stroke guys feel the same.

David_Wallis 11 November 2003 03:28 PM

Andy,

Yes.. there are.. but not for public consumption.. as if I say im going to run then dont.. its not worth the hassle.. I will let you know when though!

Boost at the moment is circa 1 bar..

My revlimit is not dictated by some 60's rule of thumb re piston speed.. my revlimit WILL be 8k rpm. From memory my cams were wilder than adams..

Andy my main concern is grip on the rollers..

Boost is minimal ;) below 3k.. You can hear the turbo starting to spool (its not a quiet turbo).. it then comes on full song at about 4k - 4.2k rpm.. next thing you know is its at the limiter..

Off boost for my low compression (did I just say that :D) it goes well..

You could crawl around at 2k and out accellerate a std scoob I would have thought.)

Antilag and cam timing mods may help spool as I run std ish cam timing at the moment..

Cant remember what else there was.. so Ill post this :D

David

David_Wallis 11 November 2003 03:31 PM

oh and andy.. I can tell how it spools in low gears but not really above 3rd and 4th.. too quick ;)

David

Andy.F 11 November 2003 03:39 PM

David

We have a new 'state of the art' rolling road opening up here shortly. Climate controlled cell etc etc.
I have not seen it but I'm reliably informed that the rollers are studded in some way  This sounds nice n grippy to me :)

Andy

Pavlo 11 November 2003 03:47 PM

Andy,

I only heard something about 7500rpm revlimit shortly before I was hanging on for dear life in a cloud of PS fluid smoke.

All good fun.

PAul
